Went to my local dealer today and saw a Honda VFR 1200. It looked real good and the V4 motor is suppose to be a charmer @ 172 hp and about 590 lbs dry weight. Has anyone test drove one? The dealer had a potential buyer so i couldn't take it for a spin.

My local dealer has one , the reviews are good except for range . It was $4500 more than the FJR so the choice wasn't hard.

Personally I stay away from 1st year models of any motor vehicle. It has a lot of potential. I understand there is another version in the works that is more Sport Touring oriented, some photos in the various mags.

Got an email recently from rider friend, Mike -- here's what he wrote:

"Stopped in a Honda dealer over the weekend. They had a new VFR1200 on the floor. Pricing should make any BMW rider feel right at home:

Base Price: $15,999

3 bag setup: $2399

Center stand: $249

Heated Grips: $349

Nicely equipped: $19,000 plus freight, setup, tax, title and license."

Rode one out of Warrenton VA (twice). The first time the ergos caught me a bit off-guard - I found it more aggressive than I thought it would be from just sitting on it. The second time I was more comforatable. Only went about 4 miles and did not ride it real aggressively. Power was fine (didn't find a huge difference from the FJR for the way I ride). There is a noticeable flat spot in power delivery between about 4k and 6k on the tach. Handling was definitely lighter and more nimble than the FJR. I did enjoy riding it.

Yep, short range and price are going to make it a hard sell. It is 80% of a sport bike and you can get a 100% sport bike for thousands less. Short range will turn off sport/TOURERS.

The dealer where I rode it knows this and is willing to sell at cost - I suspect other dealers will do the same if you find it is something you really like.
