O.K. and thanks for the tips... one other concern was the thermostat raising 2 bars from the mid point as soon as I got off the highway after doing 2 straight highway hours. I am off to ride again sunday and will take a better look at my thermostat and try to pin point the where the heat is coming from.

thanks, and great riding!

There've been a few threads on this, and I participated in one where I think it was really, with fairly great certainty, finally laid to rest that in hot weather you want the vents in the out position. I ride with them out 100% of the time, and that's because of the temps. In hot weather the engine heat makes the already hot air hotter. The more BTU's of heat that your legs absorb the more your body will have to work to overcome that heat. Any air above 98.6F that's blowing on your legs will be raising the temps of your legs. And the more air that's blowing at that elevated temp the greater that heat transfer to your legs. It's the kind of thermodynamics that all of us can understand once explained well.

So my rules are:

1) When the weather is hot I don't want to have the hot air, which is then additionally heated by the engine, hitting my lower legs.

2) When the weather is cold the engine doesn't warm the air enough to overcome the wind-chill, so I leave the vents out then also. (This probably is one of your YMMV things.)

There's about a 15F span of temps (about 70F to 85F) that I think are about perfect for having them in. Above and below that I find noticably more comfortable with the vents out. I just wish there were some cover-up plugs to hide the fugly screw-holes that are exposed when in the out position.

If you want to experiment with it yourself, do like I did - wait until it's 100+ outside, have the vents out (blowing away from your legs). Let the engine get good 'n' hot at highway speeds. Then put your legs out there in the air-stream for a minute and see how much hotter or cooler they get. I found that they got noticably hotter. I guess that this could be one of those YMMV things, so at the very least the above experiment gives you a way for you to decide if you prefer the feeling your legs have in the air blast over how they feel in the relative calm.

That really bites. Everything I've read on the 06/07 is Yamaha solved the heat issue. I've got an 04 where the heat is bearable in jeans, but annoying in 85F+. Anyway, thought about upgrading to the 06/07, but NO WAY, not if there's still a heat problem.

There is no "heat problem" with the 06-07's. At least not more than anyother bike. My 600 mile ride to the Dragon last year went through 99 degree sunny hot weather and I would be hard pressed to say the bike itself made me hotter. The back of my neck got much hotter from the sun than any part of my body due to the bike.

Of course, some folks are just bitchy wussies that should just take the airconditioned car....

Took my first 6 hour ride on my 07... after a couple of hours I noticed lots of heat coming out of the fairing by my thighs. On hour 6 as I exited the highway my thermostat (which is normally right in the middle) raised up a couple of bars. Any thoughts?
O.K. FNG I am, can someone move my post to "technical problems" and not "technical discussions"?
pumpkin,

This bike get warm in tempuratures above 80. It obvious that you did not come off of a "hot" bike and onto the fJR. If your use to something hot, the FJR is no problem. They made some great strides with cooling this beast down in 2006-2007, but the bike still puts off more heat that any of my other 10 previouse rides (except for my st1300.....that was just rediculous!!!). The posts say it all. if you owned a pre-2006 model, the 2006-2007 are fixed. If you came from an older bike (that wasnt set so lean......like a st1100), your going to think this one is warm. you'll notice less heat if you keep you windshield in the full down position. As the shield comes up , so will some of that heat.

It is what it is.

I was just about to comment on the same thing...screen goes up, warm air from the motor now vents itself in that 'vacuum' area between yourself and the screen. Not a bad heater on a cooler day.

I had a 93 FJ1200, and would often ride that through the worst of our summers here in Perth (>42C). No heating issues from that motor. No cooling fans...just good old fashioned air cooling. I never got to ride a Gen I FJR, but my 07 has not made me uncomfortable with heat issues. In fact every time I ride the 07...well you guys know... :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

I've been told to adjust the vents out to reduce heat. I've noticed my '06 registers 5-6 bars normally during summer. Common for it to go up to 7 even 8 when stopped at a long light. This is the desert wasteland known as Sacramento, CA.

I really haven't seen any posts about "proper" temp display on Gen II bikes. Would like to know myself. :dribble:

The 07 FJR isn't bad at all. My Busa put out about the same amount of heat. It just had a smaller windscreen. I actually find that having the side vents out create a pocket for the heat to flow into. I usually only have the sides out on a cool day, and in on a warmer day. Could be different, but that's what I found.

I beg to differ with you on the 07 not having a heat ptoblem. I rode the other day and the right side burns me up.

Yep. My first FJR - an '07 model. Puts out more leg heat than my Harleys. It's much worse with the windshield in the "all the way up" position. Great for cooler riding, though. Was out riding the other day and the display read 99 degrees. Just put the windshield all the way down and it worked out fine. More air flow to the body and less heat to the legs. Seems like I get more heat on the right side......

Thanks again for the input... did another 6+ hour with Wings out and Windshield lowered - no heat issues this time around!

thanks again!

:D
