It's nice to see I wasn't the only dummy asking this question. I looked everywhere but here for an answer, and Ignacio promptly sent me to the right place a few minutes ago.

I was concerned I might have stepped on some toes recently, which I try not to do, but now that I understand how this works, I won't lose any sleep tonight. At least nobody has sent me any nasty PMs calling me names.

So I'm a little slow on this one. Does the rep-o-meter do anything other than indicate how many times your comments have been anonymously liked or disliked? Seems kind of useless, or worse, potentially disruptive.

On the subject of being disruptive, I have an idea. Let's modify the system to send a PM that says something like, "XXX did(n't) like what you typed," where XXX=the voter's screen name. At least there would be some accountability for folks who would want to press the magic little minus button without ever giving any actual feedback to the person who made the post. I can just imagine the butt-hurt possibilities.

Better yet, anyone up for a competition to get the most negative rep? We could have prizes, set a beginning and end date, come up with some ground rules. Anyone?
