I am now looking to buy my 1st secondhand FJR. Having looked at numerous reviews it would appear that the 2006 model onwards has some enhancement worth having. Could you experts out there give me some tips of what to look for so that I know that I am definitely looking at a 2006 plus model and not a 2005 one sold and registered in 2006 :dribble: ?

2006 is Cobalt Blue - you'll also notice that the fairing panels next to where your knees will be as you sit on the bike will each have to screws to open up the air flow panels - GenI bikes lack that useless feature.

2007 is Black Cherry Color

2008 & 2009 are Black

My thoughts,

hang the expense, go for the much loved GEN1.

Regards

Surly

Quickest way is to look at the mirrors. Gen I has a single arm going out to the mirror while the Gen II's have a double arm.

Easy!! The '06 will be the real pretty one! The one that will give you goose bumps. If you look at them side by side, there would be no problem seeing the difference.

Good Choice! ENJOY! :yahoo:

The advice you give him will lead him naturally to the Gen I '05. :p

This is actually the one you want.

You can most easily identify the 2006 and newer as they're most often seen in the rear view mirror of the Gen1 bikes. That is when they're not on the side of the road with an electrical issue.

They are NOT useless-you can have endless fun opening and closing them to find out if they make any difference!

Thanks Guys, I thought that this might be a controversial question! It seems to me that the most obvious point and easiest to spot is the introduction of a 12v power socket in the glove compartment in '06. That is assuming that the UK model is the same as the American.

Incidentally the points that have driven me to wanting an '06+ model (bearing in mind I'm only going from what I have read) are Heat deliver to the rider, screen causing stability problems and pillion peg position. (my wife has been screwed up on the back of a Fazer to date!)

I've had an 04, 06, and currently an 07. For my money, I would go for a Gen II everytime. My son on the other hand thinks the Gen I is better. The 04 had ZERO issues but my 06 ignition problems left me stranded in NC and limping home from SD. No issues with the 06 (my son owns it now) since the final 4th ignition switch replacement. The other recalls on the 06 did not affect me at all.

Never heard of Gen Is having screen stability issues....I've had mine up to FJR nominal speeds and no issue there.

Regarding passenger peg positions, I think knifemaker or somebody else makes modifications if you want to lower the the pillion pegs.

Regarding heat...I had an 04 that bit the dust a bit hard in Arkansas...I replaced it with another 04...no heat issues, and I've been riding in temps ranging from 17F to 100F.

However, if you want to pay more for a slower bike...go right on ahead...England is still a free country - I think.

Thanks for the response (also a proud grandfather!) Can you tell me what it is for you that particularly makes you prefer the Gen II version. I'm guessing that any ignition switch issues with an '06 bike would have been sorted by now.

Thanks for the response, England a free country humm... that debatable

From my reading on this forum, I believe the Gen I's can be identified by the ominous ticking noise....sort of like a time bomb waiting to 'splode, but you can't see the clock. Really, there are even recordings of this noise here on the forum.... <_<
