How far do you think an FJR could go in one hour?

No auxiliary fuel, stock trim, bags in place. I think it would run out of gas before an hour if flat out, so at what speed would it run for an hour? Or would it go farther by running dry shy of an hour, say at 150, or by running at the exact speed which would allow it to run for an hour (130?)?

Thinking it's never been tested, so hypothesize away....

 
Welllll, let me postulate.

IIRC, when running at higher speeds (like the 130 mph you mentioned) the FJR will get terrible gas mileage, like 28 mpg or less. Even that, 28 mpg x 6 usable gallons, would get one 168 miles. I've never run at those elevated speeds so it's hard to guess. I know that 100+, fully loaded I was getting around 32-34 mpg

If one could run 150 at WFO......since I think horsepower required to run at a speed is the square of the speed.....fuel economy would be inverse to that. I'm guessing mileage would drop to 10 or 15 mpg...making range be 65 to 100...being sure to run out of gas far less than the hour mark.

I say this because I have seen the reserve light come on at the 130 mile mark on one particular run in Nevada at an elevated clip (just a bit above MM) and averaged 23.5 mpg for the leg. It did take me more than an hour to run out the tank (technically flip to the fule cell), but if I had been WFO I'm pretty sure mileage would have dropped in half again. But, common sense prevented me from being that stupid....so it's still theoretical. ;)

Matt did you mean WFO or WOT?????

John Dunke and I ran from Shoshone to Beaty which was 82 miles and we did in 40 minutes with a third of a tank left.... so you might get 120 miles in the hour.

You hypothesized no auxilary fuel, but even if you ran out before the hour, mighten you still have part of that hour to stop and refuel. So this is where it might get very hypothetical, and assuming/relegating an arbitrary 15 mpg at 150 mph: starting from a stop; one minute to reach 150, run at 150 for 90 miles 36 minutes, decel/stop/fuel/accel back to 150 five minutes (arbitrary), continue at 150 mph for 18 more minutes equals 140 miles.

phase 1 1 minute, 0-150 2 miles (arbitrary)

phase 2 36 minutes at 150 90 miles

phase 3 5 minutes, gas stop; decel 1 mile, accel after fueling 2 miles (again arbitrary)

phase 4 18 minutes left at 150 mph 45 miles

I may be totally wrong, but keeping this aged mind working; priceless. Thanks for the mental exercise.

That sounds plausible......................However, would this be considered an "average" hypothetical? If we are going this far, should we factor in the variables??

1 - Completely stock machine (no BJ mod, no WW airbox, etc......)

2 - Temp, humidity, pressure...........don't forget wind

3 - Altitute (sea level constant, or rolling through the mountains)

4 - Road conditions, in conjuction with tire condition (rolling resistance)

4.5 - Is there regular air, or Nitrogen in the tires??

5 - Will the bike be travelling primarily east or west? will the spin of the earth play a factor??

6 - Rider weight.

7 - How many corners?? will they scrub off too much speed, and increase gas consumption?

8 - Windscreeen up or down? Is the rider "tucked" the whole way?

Is there anything else?

Time Zone??? Would it be possible to make it from one time zone to the next, in 1 hr?? It would be like you never left right??

Sure, if you were about 9 degrees from the pole. 15 degrees of longitude is about 150 miles up there.

Might need spiked tires and some serious heated gear. And smooth ice.

Wonder what hitting a crevasse at 150 mph would be like? Would you even have time to know you were dead? :blink:
