how fast would a GEN II need to be going to lowside and standback up?

My wife lowsided on the right side(she is completely ok) as the bike was sliding, she says it stood back up and then fell over on the left side. So both sides are pretty well scraped up. She claims so was only going about 20 mph at the time, but I have my doubts.

It had been raining, and she over gassed a sharp corner and the rear end slid out. She called me to help her and I was only 10 minutes away, but before I got to the scene, some friendly passer by, helped her stand the bike up, and she headed for home, I passed her on the road.

Both mirrors are gone, windshield broken, headlight broken, frame sliders on both sides ground down, fairings on both sides scraped to ****, side bags really scraped up. The right side is worse, cause that is the side she went down on, but, damn, she managed to get both sides.

No mechanical or frame damage it appears, just body, she was wearing all her gear, and has not got a scratch, but she says her left ankle is a little sore. At the moment, I am glad she is not hurt, but am very sad about my 07, I rode it about 3k miles from Washington state, and have not even got to know the bike, and now I'm afraid it's totaled.

I have never gone thru this before, does this sound like a totaled bike to you all? Or can all the cosmetic damage be fixed without being totaled?

 
Mine did exactly the same thing at the same speed. When it got to the grass on the other side of the road it self righted and went into a hedge. And I have this on film. It needs to hit something to initiate the self-righting maneuver.

 
I think that if something were in the way to stand it back up maybe but It seems like more than 20mph would be needed ;)

 
An 05? It's totaled.

Now, if I were you and had some mechanical skills, I would buy it back from the insurance company and rebuild it using ebay or discounted new parts. It will have a salvage title, but you will be into it for cheap.

Depending on your insurance company, deductible, farkles and so on, they are going to give you $5500-$6300 for the bike. If you can buy it back for less than $1500, I would go for it.

Glad your wife is ok. Guess she won't be riding your bikes much in the future, huh?

I have two FJR's an 05 and an 07, the 05 is my wife's bike, but she has been riding my 07 a little bit, and she wrecked the SOB.

what about low cost replacement plastic? If I can get the plastic cheaply, I'm sure I can replace a little body work....

Sounds awfully reasonable to me. I mean it's one of the things taught in the MSF is to keep a steady throttle or slight roll on going around a corner... Maybe she just made a mistake? Like others have said, buy it back and repaint it? time for a new color anyway? Prep it yourself and have someone spray it and yer done.

 
More than just the plastic. The front stay needs to be replaced, too....guaranteed!

If the mirrors went, the stay is bent.

You might try Zanottis and take the quote+freight into your dealer. Maybe they'll match the price...mine does.

All that damage on the front end (headlights, windshield, etc.) isn't from the low-side, it's from whatever the bike hit to roll up and over to the other side. When the bike is on its side sliding, none of that stuff can reach the ground. Only if something gets in its way will it be hurt. Tumble the bike, though, and who knows what gets hit where.

I speak as one who twice has watched his FJR slide away on its left side. Well, heard it sliding away, actually, was a bit too busy tumbling myself to actually watch it. But no windshield or headlight damage in either case, and mirrors were just scraped, although the FZR mirrors I have are significantly different from the Gen-II stock mirrors. My mirrors just folded in, and the rubber boots scuffed through.

Bodywork is expensive, even at the discount places. If it's just bodywork, mirrors, and windshield, it might not be a total. Oh, wait. Forgot headlights and side bags. The bags will be 6 or 7 hunnert each. That probably puts you over the line.

Regardless, Don't forget her gear, if you've got coverage for it. New lid, jacket, whatever got scuffed, they'll buy.

You don't have to hit something to make a vehicle roll.

A "trip" will do it with little effort, and it takes less to trip a m/c than you think. Kind of like sticking your foot out and rolling a 300 pound runner. The wheels or pegs catch pavement, edge, etc. and momentum carries it.

Under the right conditions 20 mph would do it easy.

I'd estimate $4,500 in parts plus $2,000 in labor. It's a close call whether or not insurance will total it. But if they do, I'd take the settlement check and buy a used '06. You will like it more than the '07. If she likes the Black color, pony up some extra $$$ and buy a used '08.

Remember that parts cost is calculated at retail. And it's going to take nearly every single piece of plastic, plus two side bags and a headlight bucket. Front "stay"/subframe, maybe windshield motor assembly too.
