How Hot Is Hot?

Hi All,

I just picked up my 08A yesterday (yeah!) - and I just wanted to know how "hot" is "hot."

It's been high 70s here (75-80) - and the indicator is showing 4-5 bars (about 1/2 way on the guage).

Is that OK - or not? I'm seeing other posts from people who show 2-3 bars all the time - but I don't know if that's an outside temperature issue or if there is something wrong.

I've seen mine hit 8 bars sitting at a light when it was 107. Once I started moving it went down and stayed at 4-5 bars. I just figure it is normal due to the weather and keep on riding. That is what warranty is for

I gotta' say - even with only 121 mi under my belt (on this bike) - it's really a terrific ride.

230-240 degrees is the upper range of a cooling system.

I'm normally at 4 bars but have seen it as high as 6. No worries.

I used to ride an 85 Ninja 900, one of the first water cooled mass produced sport bikes, it was always on the H unless it was moving, and even then......

JHF! High 70's is hot? That is like saying low 50's is cold.

Remember folks, temp gauges between Gen I FJRs (03-05) and Gen II (06+) are completely different and can't be compared.

Gen I FJR temp gauges have a total of 6 bars.

Gen II FJR's temp gauges have a total of 10 bars IIRC.

So, while 2-3 bars showing would be normal on a Gen I, that would not be the case for a Gen II.

I have an 08 also; generation II. Up to 107 degrees outside at least, it runs 4 bars in the country. It will never go below four bars. If over 90 degrees, when in town the temp gauge will show 5 most of the time and 6-7 when at a stop sign for very long. THen of course, the fan comes on and cools it down. Your bike sounds very normal. I think the Bin O Facts will tell you the temps per bar etc. The main thing to know right now is that you have a normal FJR.

Depends on what yer drinkin'.....sometimes 1 bar and Patron is waaaaay enough...if its a bud light night then maybe 3 bars....i dunno...where'd i park my bike?

On my 2007, 4 to 6 bars is typical given engine load, speed I'm moving, air temp, etc. I just spent the last 2 days riding in the Sierras in 65 to 95 degree temps, and 4 to 6 bars was what I saw even at 9,000 feet elevation, the beauty of water cooling and a thermostat!

If the bike gets too warm, you have two fans that will start automatically - don't worry, just ride.

My 06 has never been below 4 bars after the engine warms up. Although I have not had it long enough to ride in the winter so it has not been ridden when the outside temp is below 70.

The '06 and later models may experience more rapid coolant temperature increases when there's no air flow because they have less coolant.

The earlier models had 3.38 quarts of system coolant. The later models have 2.75 quarts. The effect may be negligible but I'd expect the temperature to rise faster in the later models.
