How many of you guys would be interested in buying an MT-01? In case you don't know what it is, its a V-twin powered naked bike that Yamaha sells everywhere else, even Canada, except in the US. From what I've been able to gather, its the same story as the FJR, "we don't think it will sell in the US". You know it would not take hardly any changes to sell it in the US from Canada. It already has the DOT reflectors on it and if the Vstar motor meets EPA regs, this would probably too considering its almost the same motor.
Its really the same concept as a Buell Lightning and those sell fairly well. I think Yamaha is making a mistake not selling it here, and I really don't understand why its being sold in Canada and not here. The market for bikes has to be bigger in the US than in Canada, isn't it?

I would pony up and buy one, even if it costs $13,000. Sure its not the fastest bike out there, but the stump pulling torque would be a blast.

Here are some links to the Canadian web site and European web site.

There is also a "micro site" with some audio clips that sound great.

CAN YOU SAY "VMAX 1"?

I don't know but I think the Warrior looks soooo much better! IMHO the MT-01 is pretty damn ugly, nothing flows. Even at an extra 100lbs I'll take my Warrior. I think the 122RWTQ will help make up some of the weight issues...might be fun to ride though...kinda like a fat chick...?

This is the promo video, which was on the yamaha site when they lauched the MT-01 in 2005(?), but its not on the micro site anymore.

Enjoy, Flere.

I called Yamaha yesterday and after alot of persuading they connected me to a product specialist. We talked about the fact that Yamaha had no plans to bring the FJR here but after having received lots of letters and emails, they decided to try it on the PDP program. Obviously the results have been great.

This is exactly how the FJR came to the US. The FJ group started an on-line petition and got close to 1 million signatures.

Before that, Yamaha had no intention of bringing the bike here, they felt there wasn't a market for it...

+1 on the VMAX concept bike!

I guess you always want what you can't have. In the US we want the MT-01/03 and the UK & Europe their nuts over the VMAX which they practically have to smuggle in.

BTW did I mention my other bike is a VMAX?

I'd buy one.

Here are some pics I took in Europe in May 2005, including the "Steel Fighter" (a factory R1 street fighter):

The truest form of getting a big bang for your buck is in the Buell.I love the Suzuki v series as well as a Ducati Monster but the sheer torque of a Buell is priceless.Eric and company are really serious in listening to their customers. If the Ulysses been two inches shorter in height I would have bought it immediately.Trying very hard to get my wife talked into letting me get the Buell XB12ss.Has enough room for both of us to do short hauls and the sound it makes echoing off the city canyons is so sweet. Here in Dallas I found a 2005 XB12s for just under 6k used and new 2007 is in the 8500 range. The MT looks awesome and would remind me of a Buell with a VROD engine

+1 I have a warrior too and the MT-1 is kinda of ugly to me. The warrior is a tough little bike.

I don't want to hijack this thread but along the same lines, yamaha used to build an 850 dual purpose bike a couple of years ago. I don't think that bike was available in the states either (designation escapes me at the moment) but I always thought that would be a great second bike. The MT reminds me a lot of that bike, what the hell was it called. It sucks gettin old.

TDM 850

It was sold here. I mentioned to my dealer that it would be nice if they sold it again (they did carry it in the US for 2 years) and he said FZ-1. He didn't think the TDM was really a dual sport. Hmm...skid plate, long travel forks, no clearance fender...it's kinda schizo. It was pretty darn popular in Europe unless I'm mistaken (calling Steph)

The MT-01 would be nice to have around in a collection, but wouldn't be in my garage if I had less than 5 bikes.

I would take one. I like having all that torque to play with without having to ring its neck in the twisties and being able to lean way over is a big plus.

Yamaha, bring it on! :yahoo:

yup orangevale, you win the ****ie prize. Always thought that would be a great fireroad bike that could mantain a good hiway speed. What is the deal with yamaha. I realize that there are a lot of thing from other manufactures that are not available here, but it seems like yamaha has a bunch of stuff that would sell. Don't they still sell a version of the fj1200 that is not available here? Thundercat or some such name? ok i'm done.

Well, while they do have many bikes elsewhere not available here, the TDM may make a comeback with the DS crowd getting amped up.

The Thundercat is the YZF600R - the 1998? design carbed In Line 4 with full fairing, multi adjustable suspension, still available here...feels pretty heavy compared to the R6's, but the price is right and it'll turn.

Fow Gid Aboud it, too much weight in such a small package and ugly. If one wants to go this route, get the V-Max with power and style. I still like the Warrior also. But for now, I'll stay with the FJR and the Softail thank you. Ride free, PM. <>< :D
