How much mileage left in this tire?

The new PR2 I recently mounted on my bike came with 7/32" of tread in the rear tire. The inside edge of the lettering on a quarter is about 3/32", which is what it appears from your picture you have left. The PR2 I removed had just hit zero tread depth at a little over 9500 miles. If this was my rear tire I would be able to get 3 / 7 * 9500 = 4,070 miles out of that tire. So I would have no hesitation to take it on a 2k mile trip.

But, I would have already clocked off ~ 5400 miles to get to that point of wear. If you have only ridden 2700 miles to get there then your remaining miles should be half of mine. Which was why Wheaton asked the questions he did. If you never track your mileage you'll never know what you have left.

PS - the last two guys weren't kidding. They really do run those tires on their bikes. I (obviously) am running Michelin PR2's.

Do Whaaaaat?......Subtract what from what? Hold on just a minute....let me get my calculator out here!

Oh forget it...just ride the dang thang. Whats the worst that could happen? You may have to stop and buy a tire...heck I had to do that two weeks ago in Harrison AR.

That tire would not last half a day. You KNOW that...

Don't go tryin to lead others down the path to ruin...

Around here, you don't leave home on a used tire.

An I bet Mr. Subway is still on OEM's...

Ya never know....

edit:

BTW, a discount Dunlop 220 sticks purdy good, but will show cord at a little over 1500 miles round here. YMMV...

Just mounted a Conti Motion. $96. delivered.

It feels purdy soft. We'll see what happens...

Thanks for all the help boys!

If anyone ever sees my bike with a car tire on the back, please take my keys and buy me a bus ticket. It would be clear, at that point, that I've lost my ******* mind, and I shouldn't be around machines, or sharp objects.

Right, two weeks ago I found myself over 200 miles from home with tire chord showing on the rear tire. Turns out, it's no problem as I made it home without incident. So based on my experience you can be assured that riding on tire chord is okay for at least 200 miles.

Nobody uses Fram filters, even those wacky guys. I think you have things a little mixed up. They use Walmart (supertech) filters and diesel engine oil. Oh wait... I've done that.

Chord??? What, the ****** sing to you?

I think it was in Gee Major.

And to the OP, there are two truths to tire wear:

#1 If you think you have a thousand miles left, plan on 500.

#2 If worried about something before a trip, change it before going lest you spoil the trip wondering.

****...I had less tread than that on my RoadSmarts when I changed them. The ONLY reason I changed them was 'cuz I was taking a thousand mile trip with the wife on the back. She ended up not going. If I had known she wasn't going, I woulda just left them on.

I would definatley take that PR2 on a 2k trip, but I'm an *****, so do what makes you comfortable.

The whole thing for me is riding along at the beginning of a long trip and having that little nagging thingie in my head worrying about whether the tires are up to it. I would just swap them out so I could forget about it. Actually, I am in about the same place, with 12,000 mi on my Metzlers, and trying to wear them down so I can change them before I take my long trip in June. Having to ride a lot before that trip is only so bad, eh? WBill

He's definitely an expert!

However, I do not see a tread depth checker...oh, that's right...he doesn't need one.

"Ride till it's shiny...then you have 150 miles to get to a tire place."
