How to drop your FJR and not damage it...

When you installed the Slider, that saved your bike, did you use a lock tight type product on the bolt? If you didn't remove the bolt and do this. This bolt is a motor mount bolt and if it comes out you will not be able to steer the bike and you will lose control. It happened to me at a very high speed. Trust me on this one!!!
I have been paranoid about this and have been checking the torque everyday. Will lock tight keep me from being able to change the sliders?

 
Will depend on what type of Loctite...Red is High Strength and Blue is Medium..

Just keep it away from the plastic parts... will eat them up

I would suggest that Loctite is unnecessary provided your el cheapo sliders are metal sleeved so that the bolts have shoulders to tighten onto. If your sliders are just plastic, the plastic will give under the bolts, so they will be loose. And, even with Loctite, while the bolts may not undo, your engine still won't be tight in the frame.

My suggestion? Get some decent metal sleeved sliders. Then there is no need to Loctite them, just do them up either to the suggested torque value or, as I did, just enough. (I don't have a torque wrench, I did mine up to be about <grunt> tight; no sign of loosening after 4 years on my '06 and 5 months on my '10.

I haven't dropped my FJR (yet) but I have found in the past that the best way to protect a bike when it falls is to thrust as much of your body under it as possible. It must work because I usually end up under the bike and it doesn't suffer too much damage. Who needs sliders? That's what my leg is for.

I thought I read in my manual, that is just the V-strom chain lubing position. :thumbsup:

But not everyone is so lucky to have piles of that white stuff around for their chain maintenance. :rolleyes:

There are way more than one or two bolts that have to come out to make a loose motor affect steering. You had something else going on there. There is simply no way that those two bolts, one on each side, will even loosen the engine significantly, much less make the bike uncontrollable.

Now, I haven't dropped a motor out of a frame, but I know a couple who have, and they should be able to back me up on the number of fasteners involved.

I've always held that Loc-Tite on the motor mount bolts is bad ju-ju, and if the sliders are sleeved so the don't compress, locking compound on the bolt is completely unnecessary. Service manual doesn't call for it.

Unsleeved sliders will compress and the bolt gets loose without actually having backed out, simply because the stuff it was tightened against went away.

No, use the blue, medium strength, loc tite.

 
Those sliders work very well... Slid my bike through an intersection at 30mph and the slider and side-bag took the brunt of it...

Where did you get those sliders? Only ones I've seen advertised are significantly more expensive!!!
D2Moto.com. But if you are willing to wait for an auction to end you can get them a couple dollars cheaper on e-bay. I'm not sure how well they would work in an actual slide because they are not real heavy like the t-rex sliders, but they are fine for what I need.
