How will a drop of 80-100 pounds affect FJR handling?

Ok my 2 cents. It is between you and the Doc. I know people that have had it and it changed their lives. I don't thing it really matters "why" you have excess body fat it can be anything from genetics to bad diet and lack of exercise. things to keep in mind are, a surgeon does surgery and will almost always pick the lap band. I would see a GI doc , as a 2nd opinion too, New gen drugs or gastric balloons are not as invasive and work well.

things to look forward to on the bike:

I read someplace 18lbs = 1HP gain

New riding apparel

less fatigue while riding

The bike will handle better I suspect, as it will be easier to lean correctly.

Good for you, whatever you choose!

It's OK bud, I stopped taking the weight-loss medication my doctor prescribed that was making me a prick.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Blaming the drugs! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Next thing he'll be blaming planetary alignment! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Thank You Very Much, RadioHowie! I'm so surprised Bustanut joker, barb, MEM and Old Michael did not catch this gaffe earlier!

It probably went unoticed by most because at times this forum is populated by a bunch of pricks but thats part of what makes fun. I will go back to reloading ammo now. To hell with you pricks.

I thought I might be able to slip it by. Old Michael, BustaNut, Barb et al. have been strangely nice to me lately. But I can count on Howie to point out the obvious. And BeemerDick to enjoy my misfortune.

B) :D

A thoughtful response. I have tried multiple medications -- one worked but it was pulled from the market years ago. Exercise and diet only got me so far, then gained it back many times (pogo weight loss). I have now had three PCP's, a Neurosurgeon (no dog in the fight), Endocrinologist and a cardiologist all recommend it over the years. They tend to say the risks are minimal versus the eventual harm of going up and down the weight scale. I even did months of an outpatient weight loss clinic in Brookline, MA years ago with a physician and team specifically trained for non-surgical weight loss. It's down to this or do nothing; I'm not much of a quiter -- a loser maybe (just ask RadioHowie, lol) but not a quitter.

The precedures I continue to research and will talk to a good surgeon on the coast that has good credentials, record and much experience.

I hold no delusions. The surgery is no more than a tool, just as diets, support groups, medications and other things are tools. It has to come from commitment to change. Never know till you try.

Hey SPU, I am 6'1" and around 220 so could stand to lose around 20-25 lbs. However, like you, I've never been overweight just undertall. Seriously, I have had type II diabetes for about 5-6 years and runs in my mother's side of the family. I found a book by Dr. Neal Barnard from Washington Univ. about reverseing diabetes (not sure of title but something like that). It is mainly a diet for diabetes that is very different than the Amer. Diabetic Assoc. diets. It is also a pretty good diet for weight loss, cholesterol lowering etc. It is primarily a very low fat diet, so mostly vegan and with little to no dairy products or animal fats. Interestingly, even though I can't seem to follow it like I would like, when I do, I find my blood sugar much more controlled and I do lose weight even when eating well. There are a lot of good ways to fix food that is enjoyable and filling if you find the right ones.

So even if you do have the surgery, you might look into something like this for long term maintenance. It allows quite a bit of carbs, so I eat pasta often and like it. They say you are what you eat, so I have to have some sweet things to maintain who I am  .

Oh honey, don't confuse "busy" with "nice" ever.

J'es sayin' ;)

As has been pointed out, your bike should feel snappier. Gas mileage should improve too. The mass that you'll have to accelerate, and the mass that you'll have to haul up the hill during climbs will be lower by as much as 3 slugs. That's on the order of a 10% reduction for the bike and rider package.
The other thing is that if you get the bike set up right for the lighter rider, you will be carrying less inertia into twisties and the bike will seem more flickable. The bike should be even more fun to ride.

I hope you're successful with this. Best of luck!
+1000 Michael my friend...
by far, in my opinion, the worse part of riding is getting on and off the beast

I'll just sit there trying not to look impolite/rude like at gas stops when I have no functionally reason to get off

mounting/dismounting has got to be lots easier (well the bike too  , now that I said it)

Ephedrine is an over the counter bad news drug that causes irregular heart rhythms , Hypertension and a host of stimulant type symptoms. It is in cold meds ( the ones you have to ask for) diet pills etc. The worst prescribed one for obesity was Redux that screwed up heart valves etc.

Just curious... what was the name of this particular med?
Dale, I wish I could remember. It went off the market with the Phen-fen cardiac fears. It was working great. No appetite, lost 80 pounds in 4 months. All kinds of good things going on. Then the FDA pulled it. I've often tried to wrack my brain, but I can't remember. It was Rx'd back in '96 or so. My long-term to-do list includes researching what it was. Maybe a forum member knows. If I heard it I'd probably remember it. But since it can't be had I haven't persued it.

Redux was it! It got wrapped up in the Phen-Fen (? sp.) scare. It worked great for me and I had a cardiac stress test after it was pulled. Heart like an ox. Redux was a miracle drug for me. I wonder how many people have died of heart disease due to obesity vs. those that would be still alive with what these drugs could do? The research and data on Redux was actually fairly weak, but the hysteria over weight loss drugs and Phrn-Fen at the time swept it into the dustbin.

Phentermine (an amphetamine precursor and half of the Phen-fen combo) caused severe crankiness and some moderate insomnia in me earlier this year. It worked fairly well, but I had to stop it after an intervention by some co-workers and my wife.

It is always a risk/benefit decision. I hate when Washington D.C decides what is right for me, and not my doctor, me and family.

And just a caveat -- all meds can kill you or cause problems. But the medicine that kills one can save another. You can't ignore the research, but you have to be able to discern it's limitations. There is an old saying, "Treat the patient, not the lab result." Same goes for medication research.

Your mileage will vaary -- I guarantee it.

EDIT: The reason ephedrine is behind the counter is because it is a main ingredient in methamphetamine production. And because people were misusing and abusing it. Taken as directed, cold medicines that use ephedrine are no more dangerous than other OTC's.

I can't argue with that! If I have a seat bag on the FJR (thus I can't swing my leg over) it is a *****! My KLR is another ***** on anything but level ground to get on with my box on the rear rack. Embarrassing rolling the thing around a mildly sloped parking lot looking for the right angle to get on or off.

As for the bedroom ... I'm not going there (pun intended).

I never will with you again.
