I-90 or 212

I have never taken 212 as a short cut (Miles) to riding out I-90. Can someone give me some advice?

I will most likely hit this section at night or dawn, so I am concerned with creatures. Any advice or other concerns

would be greatly appreciated. Headed out of LaPush, WA to Eastport, ME on the "Sunset to Sunrise" ride.

Annie and I have ridden 212 between Crow Agency on I-90 and Belle Fourche, SD many times. Saves about 50 miles.

The chance of animal strikes is about average for this part of the world, which means significant. Riding at night makes it a greater concern. Riding the interstate does not erase the animal issue. Two riders have hit elk on interstates in western Montana this summer. Having had a collision with a deer myself a few weeks ago, I am a bit more sensitive to this risk, but you have have to decide how much risk you're willing to accept.

I have never seen a LEO on the Montana section, but tend to see them in WY and SD.

Get fuel in Hardin. The Exxon at Crow Agency is a dump. If you need fuel again then get it on the east side of Broadus or Alzada. I'd avoid stopping in Lame Deer. Between Crow Agency and Ashland you'll be on Crow or Northern Cheyenne land. I've never seen Indian or BIA police on 212, but they have their own rules.

You are right on point with that Vic, I have had 2 near strikes in that area. On the way home from Red Lodge, I had a chance to take

212 in the daytime. Now I am kicking myself for not checking it out. I think I will risk it for the ride though, with fuel in Billings, MT and

Box Elder, SD.

Tony, The risk of creature strike is much higher on 212 than on I-90.

The risk of running into, or being run over by an intoxicated driver is 400% greater on 212 especially between Ashland and Crow Agency, thaty risk remains high until you are West of Hardin MT.

I do not ride 212 after dark, prudence should take precedence in this instance.

I echo Pterodactyl's LEO observations, though I personally have never come across an LEO in the short Wyoming section. I have been stopped and warned by the county mounty for not slowing to 50 MPH to go through the metropolis of Alzada MT
