I apologize for another "ticking" thread

If it was my bike, I'd pay for a valve check, and expect that the CCT service should be done under warranty. I'm assuming that the valve checks on this bike may not be documented, and by this mileage there the second check is overdue. Everyone wins if a reasonable cost is estimated for valve checks and the worn out CCT gets changed under warranty.

I had them write cam chain tensioner on the form they had me sign. That is the part that will be (or should be) replaced.

I guess I'll find out when I see the bike. If it's still ticking when I get there, then I won't take it home until it's fixed.

I'll call tomorrow and ask about the valve check/adjustment. Maybe they'll cut me a deal for feeling bad. If not, I'll bring it to the indy I've been using for years for my other bikes. I trust him more than I do this dealership.

Take it to the guy you trust for the valves.

You never know if they really check / adjust them or just take your money.

They called me and left a message this morning saying that the "ticking" isn't severe, but they're going to replace the cam chain tensioner anyways for me, you know, since I brought it up.

Comments like that piss me off! Of course the ticking isn't severe, but what is severe is a blown engine! If they don't understand what a failed cam chain tensioner can do, then I sure as hell don't trust them to do a valve check or anything more in-depth on my bike.

Anyways, I should have the bike back on Wednesday, so we'll see.

I've followed this one with mixed feelings.

On the one hand, the dealership said that the bike shouldn't have passed their tech inspection with a noisy cam chain.

On the other, they are not quibbling about the error, and they admitted it :)

The message they left is saying a couple of things ... They accept the tensioner needs replacing, but they are human, and they want to minimize the error so "it's just a little noise" :)

There are signs here that this dealership might be one of the good ones ... be open-minded when you pick the bike up, and try to get to know them a bit.

So I have an update. Received my bike today, it's still ticking but not as much. You can definitely hear it from 2800-3400, but it goes away at higher rpms. My dealer thinks it was a bad tensioner and the valve guide seal. They only replaced the tensioner, and told me to call them when I'm ready to replace the valve guide seal and they'll replace it under my warranty (this was awesome of them!). They even offered free pickup with their trailer. I'll take them up on their offer late this fall and have them do the valve check/adjustment as well.

Now, here's something interesting for you guys. Here's the CCT that was replaced. Have there been many blue dot failures?

Good (and lucky) for you they're gonna institute the "tick fix" on their dime. It's quite involved, and not cheap.

Can''t answer your question about "blue dot" failures. There was a spike in CCT failures back in 08-09....none before, and I don't believe any since.

The CCT that i see in the photo is the blue dot version and it shouldn't have a problem. Can you upload a new video with the new CCT?

The "blue dot" CCT fixed a different problem that had nothing to do with the "ticking" sound. The older CCT's allowed too much slack in the timing chain and you could hear the chain slapping against the metal that did not sound like a "tick". The ticking sound was associated with issues around the valve guides. To my knowledge there have not been any failures caused by the updated (blue dot or newer) chain tensioners. Any failures were caused by not replacing the original CCT soon enough in the older FJR's.

I'd get that valve guide seal fixed sooner than later. Before those guys realize what they promised to fix and what it's gonna cost them in parts and labor...Unless they don't care cuz they're getting paid by the warranty company.

Off-topic, but I was going through the bike today and I noticed some oil around the shock (possible leak). I cleaned it up the best I could, so I'll check it when I get home tomorrow from work. Do you guys think it's worth bringing up to the dealership, or should I consider this a wear item and go with an aftermarket solution?

If it is covered by the warranty bring it up.Worst they can say is no.
