In the past 8000 miles I have picked up three screws in my rear tire - the first two times I scrapped otherwise perfectly good tires even though the holes were fairly small - I was worried about steel belt failure.

Yesterday I was washing the bike and - lo and behold there's the end of a screw stiocking out of the rear - this time off center. It was holding air just fine, so I rcaled my dealer, who made time for me this afternoon (in spite of the fact that his shop is backed up to the max - ode to my local dealer) and he pulled the tire and patched it from the inside. The mechanic praised the condition of my ride and told me the screw had indeed 'gone through' - because it was 3 inches long!. But he also said it was clean and the patch would be fine for the next however long.

He said I must have picked it up while in a corner, given the location and angle of the screw.

Enough already!!

I've been averaging about one rear tire puncture per 10K miles. I'm not riding anywhere different in terms of lane position, but man, that rear tire must have a freakin' magnet in it. I think the culprits have been: bolt, nail, screw, sharp rock. Good thing the bike is so civilized when the back tire goes flat...

You don't work construction, right? Live next to a new development? Maybe a contractor dumped a box of screws and you're picking them back up for him one-at-a-time.

Better luck,

Back in detroit I picked up crap seems like every week. 7 years down here in FL, only one so far. You just need to move! ;)

A rubber chicken tastefully affixed to the handlebars is your only hope. Before the chicken, I would get a nail/screw/piece of space shuttle in the first two weeks of a new rear tire. My ST1100 got trailered to a dealer with a hole in the sidewall of a D205.

On I-95 in Miami I dodged a riding lawn mower. A utility trailer came unhitched from a truck, and was ejecting it's contents. First lime bags were exploding creating a whiteout cloud, then the mower. It looked like the tire smoke scene from Days of thunder. I was threshold braking the old ST1100 and heading for the door of a sideways police cruiser. I must of sucked some wind, and swallowed my cigar. Missed the cop and gave myself the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the cigar butt. Weaved through the wreck and continued on to Key West.

You guys need to suspend one of these from the steering head.

So far, so good on the road hazards. Only some glass in my rear Shadow tire.

Now my car on the other hand...$5k in damage last Sunday from hitting a DOG!

I've had 4 nails in last 2 years. That's why I plug and patch from inside if it is a "clean" puncture. Last three tires lasted till gone. Tires cost too much money for this rider. JMHO, YMMV.

One thing to remember is to always ride in the travel lane and not to get off on the shoulder or any place debris will accumulate. These areas are full of screws, sharp metal, nails and other road trash. I have been pretty lucky, one nail in about 36k miles.
