... So I put it back together but it wouldn't start. Dad decided that it was ok to help me at that point, and he suggested I might have the cams off by 180. He was right, and she started right up after repositioning the cams.
Wow, can't believe you survived cranking it with cams off 180°.

Didn't the Vega cut down on dates?

I guess the engine wasn't a crasher? That's the only thing I can think of.

The Vega did cut down on dates, but at least it was rock solid reliable. I'm not saying it didn't use oil or rust into a swiss cheese facsimile.

Everyone should own a BMW at least once in thier life.
I did, once.
Like they should own an Alfa Romeo at least once (so they can appreciate every other vehicle they own the rest of their lives)?
Had two Alfa's in the early 70's. The 71 GTV is on the short list of car's I wish I still owned.

Have some fond memories of embrassing a few vettes in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Went to buy a Spider once, when the salesman tried to start it the battery was dead. Put the charger on it, tried the starter again. There was a loud pop and the magic smoke appeared from under the hood.

After that I put Alpha in the same category as old Brit bikes with Lucas electrics.

Nice to look at, but don't want to own one.

Never owned a BMW motorcycle, but always had a Jones to own an 1150 RT back in the day. Glad I chose the FJR. Admire the new BMW bikes, but no real remaining desire to own one.

BMW cars, another matter. Owned many, from a cherry 2002 to an awesome Z3 coupe (the odd-duckling one) to a sublime E28 535i to a E46 wagon to an X3. Loved them all, and always wanted a 3.0 CSL. Recently came close to pulling the trigger on a the six-cylinder twin turbo diesel, and have admired the new diesel wagons. And who doesn't lust to own an unmolested E30 M3?

Lately, other than the diesel wagons, not as much of a fan of the new models. As BMW caters more to the masses in order to move volume, they've lost a lot of the special characteristics that made the older 3 series, 5 series, and Z models so special.

It's bikes for me now, at least until I can lay my hands on a low mileage Porsche Cayman R or S model which has suffered sufficient depreciation and when my bank account can afford the service hit.

+ 1 for Klubis' great story. Some experiences are nearly universal for those of us "of a certain age" -- The Beatles, shade-tree mechanical adventures, trading beloved motorcycles for lousy cars, girls just out of one's league, and, in my case, a 1976 Chevy Vega. Fond memories, all.

Comin in late here on he vega thing...

When i was a kid, my dad had a bright yellow Vega GT with big black racing stripes down the hood, black interior, and floor shifted std....it was the first car i fell in love with...but the camshaft seized, he freed it with a pipe wrench once..drove it a while, it seized again, it got parked in back yard... parents got divorce, and it rotted into the weeds before i was old nuff to do anything.

when i was 17(1987), still wanted one, so i saved up and I bought a neat purple one with nice mag rims from a man who sold it to me knowing that the front subframe had rotted away from the unibody...when i took it off the toter, i saw the subframe moving under the carpet on the drivers floor.. looked under the carepet in horror, then called the guy to ask for my 800 back, and he said "nope..sorry i already spent the money and, you bought it without looking.. your problem kid, consider it a life lesson... "

Still love the way they look.. dunno why..
