I have just been tow trucked back to Whitehorse. My bike stopped running a half dozen times yesterday. First at 200 miles then at 350, 354, 356, 355. At that time I turned around and made it back to a gas stop in Hope Lake. It stopped two more times on the way back, but I had started to coast down hills. It first started on the Skagway to Haines Ferry, It wouldn't start to get off. I experienced the starter shut down the electrics and all trip meters were reset. Then it struggled to turn the engine over, or seamed to since the engine didn't fire right up. The volt meter still indicated 11.6 volts. I stopped and removed farring to expose the battery. A jump start started the bike right up. I thought it may be a bad cell in the battery. So I went to get a new battery. No such thing in Haines at 5:30. I stayed the night and when I went to start the bike in the morning it struggled to keep running. I had to restart it 5 times before it continued to run. The noise from the engine was loud clanking as the it seamed it was only firing on 1 or 2 and maybe three cylinders at a time. Bangity clantity bang. etc.

I continued on as though to make it to Anchorage, but changed my mind and went to Whitehorse because it was only 250 miles vs 800 plus. There is a yamaha dealer here and they had a new pre charged battery. I got it, and they told me to bring in the old one and they would load test it, just to make sure it was the battery. It tested A+.

The mechanic there thought it may be a bad ground somewhere???? I put the old battery back in and it started up just fine. I thought if it did the same in the morning, I wouuld continue on back home and cut my trip short 5 days. I made it 200 miles, as noted above, when the engine just stopped running. After stopping, I tried the starter and it started right up. When running the bike runs fine, just like normal, with no loss of power or bogging down.

Another 150 it stops and so on with repetative stopping, I decided to turn around and go back to Whitehorse. I would have preferred Prince George but the Roadhelp agreement says the closest service center.

Since the start of this problem, after filling in Skagway, I have done fill ups from three other stations and added some fuel additives (TRON). Now that I am back in Whitehorse, I have been riding aroud town getting food, washing the bike etc and the bike hasn't stopped once. It also started right up after the tow back and sitting overnight. To the shop tomorrow to see what they can do.

I would start wth the simplest possible cause: the side stand switch. The weather has been pretty nasty up where you are, and the switch could have mucked up. HTH, WBill

Check that your battery terminals are tight, a loose terminal can cut out power to the ECU, if you have a the fact your trip odo reset tell me that power was lost

I have the manual in front of me. Maybe it doesn't have a fuel filter. Hmmm...

Clogged air filter?

Clogged fuel line or return hose?

Those look like they're under the tank.

Pressure regulator?

Maybe electrical? battery NOT being charged? 11.6 volts is way low.

Is the battery ground OK?

Oops, you're right Marcus. Seems to be electrical in nature.

I just thought of another thing, did you have your ignition switch recall done and or have Brodies relay harness? if not look into that area for the problem

Cleaned air filter before leaving, I don't think it would cause the engine to quit running and then run perfectly again.

Maybe on the clogged fuel line, but then why is it running perfectly again.

don't know what the pressure regulator is?????

Battery checked out in a load test done by the yamaha dealer here in Whitehorse on Friday. I reinstalled it and the battery terminals were all clean and tight. I also removed the side farring to check the ground at the block and it was also clean and tight. It is normally at 12.4-12.8. It was only at 11.6 when I was trying to start the bike on the ferry. My bike starts just fine at 11.6. the volt meter indicates 13.9-14.3 when being ridden, and will often show 13.0 when there isn't any GPs etc sucking down a small amount of charge.

No recall on a 05.

I did get a cement like caking on the bike after coming down 15 miles of wet gravel road, going to Skagway. I cleaned that off this afternoon. that may have had something to do with the kick stand switch.

If I was at home, i would just go ride as normal, but I am 1800 miles from home and 800 miles to the next large city with a yamaha dealer (Prince George). And I tried that on Friday and almost got half way. I don't think the insurance company would like another $2000 tow.

Thanks for the ideas guys, I will note these to the mechanic tomorrow. Hopefully they will check the obvious first and lube the switchs, check the grounds and check the electronic uniits to make sure they are all working properly before doing any major suggestions that they may have.

FYI: Closet Yamaha dealers to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory: (I just ran this on MS S&T)

710 to Anchorage

1004 to Prince George.

I only got 317 miles from Whitehorse on Friday, not 360 as I thought. That makes the tow cost at $5.80 with the actual tow going to Watson Lake first where we spent the night, then onto Whiteorse, as the driver called it, for a total tow of 345. The flat bed tow truck was a monster. You could put a 30 foot truck on it.

I can't do much from here. I do have the service manual.

Phone: three six zero 7 nine 4 three four 5 two.

Best of luck.

Sorry that you're having problems Ken. Hope you get them sorted out and the scoot back to 100% again.

Another thought...maybe have the dealer completely empty the gas tank to make sure there's no water lurking around the bottom. Gotta say, problem sounds electrical though.

Good Luck.

Couldn't find the thread to link it, but at least one FJR battery has had a cell ONLY show weakness once it warmed up. Resulted in the same symptoms as a battery crapping out, but load tested fine. Also, here's a link to a few people who have had the battery post break off INSIDE the battery (no external problem showing) that resulted in intermittent issues like you have: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...l=battery+crack

Since it sounds like the dealer put your original battery back in after it passed the load testing, this would be my first check - maybe he can wiggle the posts while load testing the battery. If you've got a few years on the battery, wouldn't hurt to buy a fresh one.

In general, our GenIs don't suffer the ground spider issues of the GenIIs. Also, while there have been a couple ignition switch failures, they are also comparatively rare on the GenIs. Doubt the side stand switch is the culprit since that usually means you can't start after parking - doesn't usually manifest once you're running (unless it's a wire wiggling rather than the switch itself) - Whoops, just read about the sticky crap you've got coating the bottom of the bike - that puts the side-stand switch back in the running. Good luck.

Thanks for the link to Petey's battery issues. Doesn't sound like mine, but I need to look at the dash and lights, rather then focusing on the sounds of the engine trying to run in the morning. Hope it does it tomorrow morning so I have something to tell the dealer.

Thanks all

For what it is worth I just went through what Rsvl was talking about on my 04 Battery. with a 2 year old Yusa Battery. It load tested fine but when warm wasn't holding a charge very well. Replaced with new battery and works great.

I believe I read 11.6v or below is where the FJR won't run. Agree a new battery may be in order. Must suck, if I were you I'd be 3 thousand miles from home :(

Good luck

Ken,

The first paragraph of your original post sounds like a bad starter. There have been several reports of starters giving problems only when hot. They are very slow to turn over, and draw way too much current, resetting the dashboard. Most likely to happen when stopping for gas in the middle of a long, hot ride. Bike will show no symptoms when cold in the morning. Some searches will show up a few other threads with the same problem.

BUT, a starter shouldn't make a running bike stall.

Ken, you might also check the wires from the bottom of the ignition switch. That loom is "tight" on some bikes as it makes the 180 degree bend up into the frame. There have been some where the stress and vibration has caused the wires to pull (break soldered connections) from the switch.

I don't remember everyone affected but there have been reports. I remember that FJRay had that problem with his '03 and pulled the switch apart and soldered the wires back in.

And....it could be the battery.

I'm pretty sure the fuel filter is in the tank Ken - but this doesn't sound like a filter problem to me anyway. Sounds electrical - either a bad lock-out switch or some kind of intermittent broken connection. Good luck.
