If the bag is only cosmetically damaged, take it to an autobody shop. I just had mine done and it looks as good as new. I have an O5. The guy even gave me the paint that wasn't used. I cost me $150.00, far better thant the 600.00+ Yamaha is charging for a new one. Just a thought.

Lyman,

I just joined the forum after picking up a used 2008 FJR. The seller had the M-5 Two Brothers Carbon Fiber slip-ons. on the bike, plus gave me the stockers. I am older rider and like stockers better. I am on my way to post the slip-ons, but let me know if you are interested. I will probably post them at $500 plus shipping. I am open to offers. They have probably seen about 1400 miles, (seller said he put on at 500, I took off just under 2000).

Maybe I missed it, but I gotta ask. If the tow company dropped your bike, why is YOUR insurance company paying for the damage? The insurance company has insurance for just that kind of thing and they should repair your bike to the way it was before their guy(girl) dropped it. If they want to give you a hard time or refuse to pay, simply file the small claims court paperwork. It is pretty cheap, fast, and most-likely you will come out with an order for them to pay you what you are owed.

If for some reason your insurance company feels compelled to take on the costs of the repair, they should appraise the cost of the repair and either cut you a check or have it sent to a shop and fixed with new replacement parts. You should not have to be trolling Flea-Bay looking for a deal to fix something that was not your screw-up. It really sounds like you are being screwed around.

Yeah, but the problem w/ that, my insurance company wants the damaged bag
Who is your insurance company and why do they want the bag. I just recently went through this process with Progressive and they were great. Gave me a check for $2300 and didn't want any of the "replaced" parts. Garauld fixed my bag to "like new" condition for 1/5th of the price of a replacement and decided I could live with the small scuff mark on the exhaust that I would have never noticed but was pointed out by the insurance rep. $900 more in my pocket, can you say cha ching!

Insurance companies have the right to ask for the parts that they pay to replace - this often happens with 2nd tier companies or where the adjuster is being audited. It also guarantees that you will buy what they are paying you for. Note that if you are paid to replace something and the policy doesn't have an exemption clause you are not supposed to pocket the money - in the end we all wind up paying for it anyway.

As to why his insurance is handling the towing company's issue, that is typical - his company will pay to repair the bike and then try to collect from the towing company's insurance.

But . . . IIRC he wanted to go with aftermarket bags at one point - however if the insurance is paying, they're paying. So why the preoccupation with parts costs?

That I cannot understand. I'd just hand the problem to them and let them deal with it.

Actually, I asked the insurance rep if I had to replace the parts that I was getting a check for and he said as long as you own the bike (title in hand), you are allowed to do whatever you like with the check. I guess it may be different if you have a loan out. But you're right, we do pay for it in the end anyway. Years and years of paying Auto, Cycle, House and Health insurance and other than an occasional doctor visit this was the first time really using the insurance!
