I went initially for the red KLR650; then my wife saw the three bikes on the showroom floor and says she likes the blue or black better. So she suggested a poll to see what the smart forum members think. After I stopped laughing I said why not...

Here is the Kawasaki site with color options of Ebony, Sunbeam Red and Oriental Blue:

2009 color choices for the KLR650

some thoughts:

Black is hard to keep looking clean, but accessories are easy to match

Red looks really sharp, but looks like a Honda

Blue is cool but probably most common color

None of the three colors will get me laid more often by my wife. I can't afford one of each. So what do you think? I have a couple days to decide.

The only proper color for a KLR is olive green. If that's not an option the maybe a nice spray-on bed liner.

So your worried about keeping it clean and matching accessories  Doesn't sound like any KLR owners I know.

OK, seriously I'll vote for black.

A few weeks ago I was at a used bike dealer. He had been selling used bikes for 20 years. I asked him "what is the thing people care about most when buying a bike?" He did not hesitate. "Color is the only thing people care about."

I voted red. To me, it looked the best on the website pictures.

Well,...............

The red will help others see you when they're racing and your poking along the same pathway, but it does look rather Honda-ish.

The blue looks Yamaha-ish and you already own a blue bike.

The black at least has SOME Kawi green on it.

I dunno

says she likes the blue or black better.
It's looking like the black one is going home with you......

You make a couple good points Mike. I have a SPOT tracker, so when I go down and break another old bone, the helicopter could find me easier trapped under the red bike.

The blue is a bit Yamaha'ish, isn't it?

The black is looking like wife bait more and more. :clapping:

Shiney: I am with rickcorwn: KLR's should definitely be the traditional Puke Green color. Until I read the post of rickcorwn I had no idea that Kawasaki actually called that paint color Olive Green. I do know that the Puke Green ones are the fastest!!!

Looking at the icons in your sig lines, seems SPOT and some Hi-Viz color is best. Or, maybe black with the contrasting Mil-Spec orange Hi-Viz vest?

Not sure what color would work best. I DO have a buddy who rides an older red one.

His has been rode hard and well used, and after all those roads, tree branches, a few whoopsies, the plastic is scratched and marked up pretty bad. The red has faded in a most uncomplimentary way.

Now the wear and tear is going to happen to all the colors, but I am thinking the blue might not fade out as fast as the red seems to. The black will just show the mud/dust way better. Mind you, you may like/want that? dunno...

Some funny responses. I miss what Tyler would have to say. But I laughed thinking all the icons mean I should get a mil-spec vest, be sure to bring SPOT, etc. I admit I was glad the puke green wasn't an option this year; the pressure to buy that god-awefull color would be difficult to overcome. And Barb -- the thought of having a pink bike down the road just hurts my manly illusions!

So far 4 votes for Black; 4 votes for Red and 3 votes for Blue. You guys are not helping.

I'm hearing get black, find puke green spray on bedliner for it, wear SPOT around my neck and consider a floodlamp beacon farkle for my next dam tour owie so the helicopter can find me... so inspirational and encouraging.

I voted blue. If it would be the most common color it could help when if you have and oops and need to get parts to repair.

Did not vote red because as you said, looks too much like a Honda.

Did not vote black for two reasons. One is the abilty to keep it looking clean. It will show the dirt the most. Also, if it stays out in the sun and absorbs all the heat, it could be hot to the touch (read burn  ) if you touch it with a bare hand, skin.

I have a puke olive green KLR.

On a Summer day in the Sierra foothills....it's hot!

Riding dirt roads all day...it's dusty!

Should you happen to land with the bike upside down on a hill (like OM)...

...the color choice isn't likely to help you as much as a brightly colored helmet.

Bottom Line:

If your wife-unit/life-partner/S.O. has to see it in the garage and she likes black.......

I voted red for you, if you can't pick the color you should stay away from the dirt anyways. :p

"...find puke green spray on bedliner for it,..." Let me tell you something, hombre: Es Verdad! If you show up at the border crossing in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico into Tapachula, Guatemala with your KLR painted puke green spray on bedliner:

Guatemalan Federales will make you a Generalissimo! When they see Al Jesse Panniers South of the Border on my BMW GS's, they think they're ammo boxes and the most chingon thing they have ever seen. Shiney: If you find a way to attach puke green spray on bedliner for your KLR, Dios Mio I swear I will do the same thing to my newest GS and we'll ride South!
