I was describing the IBR Capitol bonuses to my wife, and she asked a good question "Do you have to be in front of the Capitol building, or just have it visible in the photo?" The reason for her question was that the Madison WI capitol building is usually viable from all the way out on the I-90/94 highway. So could you have pulled over somewhere out on the highway and snapped a photo as long as the capitol was visible?

I would say directly from the rules:

Between sunrise and sunset, the documentation required for each state capital bonus is a photograph of the capitol building. After sunset photographs may still be used if the capitol building is illuminated and is clearly visible in the image. However, we will accept a receipt from the city in which the capitol building is located in lieu of a photograph between the hours of sunset and sunrise. If a receipt is used in lieu of a photograph, the value of the bonus will be reduced by 10 points.
Your call if you want to haggle with scoring staff of that long shot from the freeway.....GZ tried that with a lighthouse some years ago and wasn't so successful...even though he circled it in the picture. :)

I would have gone to the specific coordinates they provided on the thumb drive myself.

The rally passport book had sample photos of each capitol. If someone presented me a freeway shot that differed greatly from the provided sample, I would have denied the photo.

At the end of the rally, GZ suggested that it would be beneficial to capitol-hunting riders to hit their capitols at night whenever possible, and just get the required receipt in the city and take the 10 point hit. I haven't run the routing numbers to see how possible this was. Checkpoint timing would skew any "optimal routing" options. But it was a damn good idea. As a scorer I saw a few night-time capitol photos. Those could have easily been receipts.

The scorers looked for certain features in the photographs to confirm they were of the claimed capitol building, such as number of columns, number of stories, number of domes, etc. Our passport books had reference photos of each building, taken from the coordinates given on the thumb drives we were given, which they used for comparison. Yes, many of the buildings could be taken from a distance, but the spirit of the game was to actually go to the building, not zoom into it from a ways out. Some of the pics I took from the side or rear of the building, because it wasn't safe to park the bike directly in front.

BTW, here's a pic of the Madison, WI building I took with my non-rally camera. Glad I drove up to the building; the scenery through the town of Madison, bordered by lake Monona, is beautiful!

Lake Monona, where Otis Redding died in a plane crash. This was right around the time that Sitting on the Dock of the Bay was released as a single. It was his biggest hit, and he didn't live to see it. (I'm sure everyone is fascinated by this.)

Hey Greg, congratulations on your awesome finish! Excellent job, and it was your first IBR. I am impressed.

I agree that since you were that close to the bonus it wouldn't be worth the chance to not get a closer shot, but I thought it was an interesting question.

Good point on hitting the capitols at night to save time by getting a receipt, though riding that much at night creates it's own risks.

Ha! My wife told me the exact same story the day after. I have that song on my 2820, would've been cool to know when I was there  .

I got about half of my capitols at night, and some of those neighborhoods, were a bit, ummmm, dicey :new_russian: .

We were told at the riders meeting that the picture of the capitol shoul be similiar to the one printed in the Rally book. Most were taken from close range so I think if you were too far away they might reject it.

Gosh you guys are mean. Greg is adorable!

We were told that we should go to the coordinates provided for our photo. I think specifically to let us know GZ style photos wouldn't be accepted. It is a good thought though! Good on your bride for thinking it through!

I got a couple receipts at night and didn't even bother trying to see if the capital was doable at night. In hindsight, it was probably worth a try. 10 points was kind of a lot if you were right there...

Great job 413 and 440! Great to meet you Greg and Sleeping Beauty :)

I looked and looked for a copy of the 2005 IBR photo by GZ of the lighthouse. It was day 6 and was funny as hell to see the Polaroid with a circle around a little dot you could barely see.
