'07 Gen II. 2nd owner. 26k mi total, I have 14k on her myself. Been raining here a LOT in NorCal, but I ride anyways.

Riding home Friday bike stumbled and nearly stalled 1/2 mile from work. Pulled over and it was idling fine. Kept riding another 1/4 mile stalled and died in the intersection. Coasted bike to shoulder.

Initially:

Turn Key, dash fash, speedo/tach reset, dashe the goes dead

Finally;

Turn key, dash may flash on, but nothing happens.

bike trailered home.

Today:

If I don't turn key all the way on (to the right) bike fires up fine and idles no pbolem. Wiggle key and bike dies. Seems like key needs to be in one place for it to make propper contact.

My guess its the ignition switch is shot/ worn out. My hope is this is a warranty issue.

There is a recall on many of the ignition switches. Check with your local dealer. They can look up the records for your VIN number.

Sounds like the factory recall for the defective ignition switch and should be covered under warranty. Same thing happened to me in CA but I was lucky to not have been on the highway when it happened. My switch choked on me at 52k.

Make sure when the dealer does the recall repair they follow the instructions from Yamaha and swap out the lock cylinder from the old switch. When they give the bike back to you you should be able to use your original key.

Insist on it!

Also, this is a safety recall, it should cost you nothing.

Good luck.

Thanks doode!

Have you checked, or done the ground spider fix?
Grounded spider installed 2 weeks ago. All the hooyas looked ok, never-the-less I did it anyways.

As long as the switch is repaired under warranty, the rear brake binding issue is RELATED to this ig problem and is eliminated, and they replace under warranty the broken rear passenger grab bar that BROKE :angry2:

I'll be happy.

I'm curious...how is the rear brake issue related to the ignition switch issue? Trying to learn something here...

Sorry. Upon leaving the office I noticed the bike wasnt rolling/coasting as smoothly as it should have. VERY VERY minor though. Once the bike died the second time and I was on the shoulder of the road I found the rear wheel was basically seized up and would hardly turn. Rear disc was also hotter than ****. Eventually it cooled down and I got the wheel free from the pads (no, brake bluid IS propperly topped off). I assume that the ABS check done when turning the key on was faulting causing brake piston issue?? Other than that, I can think of no other reason the binding occured as I do not ride with my foot on the rear pedal. I noted this to the dealer.

Just spoke with the dealer. (Jackarse). I guess the recall work done on the ig swich is a 2 program job, such that 2 items are replaced. Come to find out ,TA DAHHHH, only 1 replacement was done. Sooo, I was lied to when I had them conduct an inspection prior to buying the bike making sure all warranty work was up to date; IT WAS NOT.

So, maybe they will just replace the passenger handle out of guilt after they replace the god dammed switch.

I've got a '04 doing the same thing, don't see where the recall ever went back that far. Mine is fixing to turn 52,000 also. besides paying the $180.00 for a new one, any ideas?

I believe there is a mod you can do to the system to prevent this. However, as it involves stalling the bike while you could be in mid lean in a twistie, I would absoloutly just pay the $180 and get it done right.

Look in the Bin O Facts and the FAQ section to see if your '04 has had all the recall work done there. I believe a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) was a recall item on '04s.

Usual cause of rear brake binding is the lever pivot needs lubrication. I found this out before it caused too much heat because (believe it or not) the ABS system on my bike complained. Wrote it up here. Easy fix if that is the problem and not seized calliper pistons.

Great posts...both this year's and the previous write-up. :clapping:

The rear brake master cylinder needs rebuilding and the brake fluid flushed with clean new stuff. There is a very small hole in the master cylinder called the compensator port. It's job is to vent the hydraulic line back to the reservoir when the brake is fully released. When this gets blocked by whatever spodge builds up, the master cylinder will pump a little bit more into the line thereby jacking the caliper pistons closer and closer to the brake rotor. Eventually the caliper will get hot and seize.

That happened to my Honda Ascot at mile 277 a long time ago.

Wheaton and Brodie, I read your posts a day too late. Took the bike into the shop yesterday to get the ignition switch replaced under YES

I also had them check the brake and yup. Simple lube job. Though it cost me $135

But, now all my brake fluid is new and happy

So, once I get this corroded starter relay issue dealt with my hope is no more electrical issues (at least for a while)

They tried to talk me into a 26k service as I'm due, but I'm not ready to drop $500+ on a service right yet. I did the TB's myself last wee and that helped a good bit.

So, thanks for all yer help! It never ceases to amaze me how useful these boards are on getting bikes running again. :yahoo:
