Tore the bike apart, then the switch assembly, resoldered all of the wires, buttoned everything back up, everything good now. Only burned up 4 hours of my day but that's better than having a dead bike. Thanks to Ponyfool and DailyCommuter for info. I really didn't want to pay for a repair and couldn't wait for Yamaha to correct it.

Did you happen to take any pics?? I'd love to get a close-up look at the failed solder joint (and the switch contacts as well for that matter).

Please report it to NHTSA or whatever whoever they are.

Very glad you were only left stranded and not trying to make a pass to have the power fail.

Mamma Yamma - you are riding a really fine line here. So far, at least on the Forum, no deaths due to ignition switch failures.

Please don't wait until you are forced to fix this...

We really can't take any more bad news.

I think I am becoming the victim of the "defective" ignition switch. I have had 4 occasions of a complete electrical/engine (.5 to 4 second duration) shut-down while moving. One of them I was accelerating briskly at a very busy on ramp in heavy traffic trying to merge across two lanes. This was at night (early morning) during the maniac phase of the morning commute. Extremely disconcerting to say the least. (Not to mention down right suicidal!)

Another time I was in the fast lane and starting to transition to the number 2 lane with "minimal" clearance between me and a car in the two lane in order to get around a slow vehicle in front of me in the #1 lane. (Come on this is CA, we share here.) Again at night, again extremely dangerous time for this to happen. Thankfully it was for just a fraction of a second as any longer would have been very painful!

I will not ride my FJR again (except perhaps to the dealer go get it fixed) until it is diagnosed and repaired.

Sounds like the same problem well documented here. I haven't had time to trouble shoot yet, but like I said I will not ride it again till fixed!

I will report it to NHTSA once I confirm exactly what it is.

Ive had two instances where I turned the key to the ON position and nothing happened. The bike only came alive after I flipped the key back and forth 10 times. Mine is getting ready to puke on me, too.

I'm on my 3rd switch & since they left the wires hanging it would fail again possibly. I tied the wire to the triple clamp to keep pressure off the switch so hopefully it will last this time. As noted elswhere putting in quick disconnects almost became very costly emotionally.
