Geek.... I've been reading your ride reports for at least 3 years and they are always excellent (of course or I wouldn't bother) but you brought back a flood of memory's when you went down in that engine room. I recognized every piece of equipment there. I spend some time in the engine room of the carrier FDR but most of my time on the USS Semmes - DDG-18.
There was the desalinger's (converts sea water to fresh water) the electric generators were located in the engine rooms (thus much wiring by the electric distribution panel) the main reduction gear, the striped propeller shaft and of course the throttle board.. while underway my position was the throttle-man in the after engine room.... I spent many hours standing by those valves. The main steam valve (big black one in your picture)above the board was "powered" .. and in an emergency could be closed in 3-4 seconds.

and "MY" throttle board... (has it really been 45 years)
The big valve makes it go forward.. the little valve backwards...
