I have a friend who recently bought one of the Whistler units. It constantly gave false alerts and gave no warning time on real ones. Using my Escort side-by-side, I could pick up a clear Ka signal a mile of more before encountering the source while his did not alert until the radar unit was in visual sight. The biggest problem with the Escort has been that it alerts so early, you sometimes may speed back up before reaching the trap, especially for instant-on.

I've been puller over numerous times for exceeding the speed limt, and have recieved zero tickets! They check my stuff, ask what kind of bike it is, hand me back my stuff and say "Nice bike!" You guys must be assholes? <_<

The Escort Passport iQ is not waterproof or even water resistant, from what I can see. I would not want $650 worth of vulnerable electronics put out in the weather on the bike.

With about the same money you can get a weatherproof GPS and a good RD. When it rains you can either put the RD in a sandwich baggie or just stick it away (who speeds in the rain, anyway?)

Escort sells their Passport 8500 on eBay, factory refurbished, for $150. The newer, more sensitive X50 version is $200. These are excellent prices for a darned good RD. I got one of the 8500's for myself a couple years ago and another one for my son.

I have an STi Driver, it is very good and has already paid for itself. I bought it on ebay for about $350, new not refurbished from this site:https://stores.ebay.ca/abetterwaytobuy . I had a problem with the unit the first week I had it and they replaced it no problems or hassles. I can't seem to upload pictures, but I use a fork clamp from techmount and the GPS antenna mount accessory plate. I had to add a piece of stainless plate (0.032") to support the detector behind my windshield and my gps mounts in a water resistant case in front of the detector so I can see both.

Well, I have been riding fast bikes for the last 20 years and haven't got one speeding ticket ! I even got stopped once for doing 155 and just got a warning. It seems none of the very nice officers that have stopped me over the years ever want to write me a ticket. I just show my 22 year old BADGE and we talk about the bike for a few minutes and just shoot the bull in general and tell each other "Be careful out there Bro"! It works every time !!!

I hear that "nah nah" ing in your post. :D

Hey, a job that deals with crappy people has to have a perk or two. I hear you can even nail willin' womenz on the hood of your squad car if you get lucky.

Zilla, does that badge thingy work for you?

Don't know about Zilla, but I don't pull the "Badge Thingy", and it pisses me off when people pull it on me!!!

Using your badge to avoid citations means that one is trying to invoke "Professional Courtesy".

This "technique" is distasteful IMO. When I get stopped I give no indication that I am a LEO.

Better investment is the Valentine 1. When it beeps it tells you which direction the ping is coming from instead of just scaring the shit out of you.

As with all such things, it's a tool. By itself it doesn't make you invisible. You still need to be aware, learn how to use the tool, and understand the benefits of "rabbits".
I have had a Valentine 1 for several years and I can't find any fault with it.

It has been in cars, trucks and motorcycles such as a Gold Wing and a Harley Davidson Road King that I fabricated a mount for. I just ordered a mount from Garauld for the FJR so it will be in service shortly.

Obviously it handles vibration very well.

After several years of service it went dead on me one day. I called Valentine and sent the unit to them. I received a phone call from one of their techs and he informed me that the unit was working perfectly. He suggested I replace the power cord, so for about $15. I ordered one from him and all has been well since. They did not charge me a dime for checking out the unit.

The V 1 saved me from a lot of road side conversations with LEO's.

Needless to say, I highly recommend it.

I don't think I will be replacing this unit any time soon.

As far as picking up signals it works better than any other unit I have owned in the past.

This is the reason I would own a V1. Aside from being an excellent piece of hardware, the support to back it up is top notch. There's no shortage of stories of great customer service from V1 out there.

.

I found an 8500 x50 on craigslist for $100. It didn't have a power cord so I bought a direct wire power cord for it with a red LED alert and a teeny shrink wrapped mute button with double stick on it. I wired the audio into my intercom and the LED is in my line of sight on the dash. I'll post some pics of the placement of the LED and button.

I just learned about this new Escort live dealio for the iphone. Now I'm looking to find a deal on a used 9500xi and trade up.

Valentine one. The last Car and driver test I read tested them all and like many tests before, V1 came out on top by a wide margin. In picking up radar and Lazer that is. Other testing places rate other devices higher than the V1 because of BS stuff like ergonomics, and easier controls to use. I could give a crap about that. Once set, I leave mine alone. I want the unit to do what I bought it for; sniff radar and lazer as far away as possible.....

Gotta link?

'Cause usually the sensitivity tests I've seen are very close (read ambiguously close) between V1 and the Escorts.

The V1 seems to win comparisons based on the directional indicator (which, no doubt, is useful), but at the non-discountable premium price they get, I'll just slow down whenever my Escort goes off, regardless of the direction. I can get 3 of the refurb Escort Passports for the price of any single V1.
