Nice work Jawdge!!

I just ordered a pair of these Seahorse SE-720 cases (in black color) to be fitted/mounted onto my SW Motech rack whenever they come in. That will probably be my everyday configuration, saving the bigger E36 cases and the top box just for longer road trips.

I still have to get hot on the electrics work. You're way ahead of me there. I bought two of the Datel Panel meter clones last spring from CycleMaxOhio.com. They are only $23 plus shipping and look nearly identical in construction to the $50 Datel I have in the FJR. They still have some. Clicky here

Fred -

Thanks a bunch for this info! I'm going to order the voltmeter above. I will eventually upgrade the luggage from the Chase Harper soft saddlebags to hard luggage, but for now the soft bags will have to do. I found some Rubbermade plastic freezer boxes to use a liner compartments to keep my stuff dry.

The cases I am looking at are Pel-1430s. These are smaller than the SE-720s that you are going with, but I would like to try top loading cases. The lid clearance on a top opening case is what I am not yet sure about? Need to get the Givi side racks first to properly size the bags and see if the top hinging lids will clear. There is a really excellent home made solution for mounting the Pelican style case to the Givi rack Here. Probably won't get around to all that until next Spring.

FYI - The tires (nearly new) that came on "X" are a Metzler Tourance (in front) and a Michelin Anakee (rear).

As I ride the thing around on the local dirt roads, I am trying to practice riding standing up. I've not done much of this on my street bikes so it is a relatively new experience for me. I found some heavier foot pegs to stand on from a GL 1800 that was being parted out. No modification, just swap the pegs.

cheers,

The only "problem" I would foresee with the top loader design is that when you happen to have a big duffle bag strapped down across the passenger seat you can't open up the bags without removing it first. At least with side loaders you'll have a fighting chance. of getting at the stuff.

I do like the plywood mount idea. I've also seen people using cut-up hockey pucks for their rack hooks. That will be half of the fun, figuring out a mounting technique. The big attraction (to me) of the Seahorse cases is that at $45 a piece they are less than half of what Pelicans go for. The Pelican 1520 is about the same case as the Seahorse SE-720, and they go for ~$100 each.

The ZOOK is mine! Title was signed over yesterday, after a very patient seller allowed me an extended payment plan. This coming Monday, the ZOOK, "X" will be registered in my name. Next, step is insure it!

Then I am off to the hills on a different kind of ride!

Geo,

congrats on the purchase !! :yahoo:

1) if you can fill up that top bag AND the two side bags....you're carring WAY too much ***** off-road.

2) If you do use the top bag you need to rotate it 90 degrees so the weight is centered over the bike ( also acts as a back rest ) ........otherwise this will happen a lot.............

Thanks Dave! After seeing your pic, my plan of keeping the Shiney side up has been shot all to heck. I bought this bike to go camping and fishing in the Sierras. Mostly near Bridgeport. I don't think I will attempt riding over a road(?) like you have pictured until after I have set up camp and most everything is off the bike except the creel and the break down fishing pole.

Hey Shiney, is your KLR still Shiney?

Sure Don, anytime, and I don't think that Wee Stroms are girlie at all! I'm sure you could show me lots of dual track roads I never tried to ride on on a street bike! :clapping:

Geez, George, you're causing me to consider adding one of these so I can be a member of the semi-secret-special-Strom owners club of the FJR Forum.

Maybe then I could sneak away and ride down to your area and ride with you and Carver.

A clean, shiny dual-sport is an embarrassment George. ;)

I think I owned it a month when I realized the NERF bars had lousy clearance so I took a dremel to a small area of the front plastic. Soft luggage is rough on plastic too as you bounce and slide over loose stuff. But the truth is I've only washed La Poderosa Diabla once; I dropped her for the first time in the driveway while trying to wash it, so I never have since. That way I don't notice the scratches much.

So have you named her yet?

Yes, See post #23. I call her "X" or "Eccks", in other words, she is my Ex. Seems like everybody I know already has one, so it was time for me to any up. :D

BTW, "Irony works in strange ways" was once on a card that I was given by a blacksmith. ;) It was a keeper.
