I own a 2003, 1300 FJR -

I think I have a slight problem that is starting to show itself and hope the knowledge base here can help me out. Here is what happens: I will attempt to start the bike, either in first or neutral but either way with the clutch pulled all the way in and when I push the starter button, it will not immediately begin to turn the engine over - there will be a hesitation and I will have to push the button again - it then will turn over fine.

Also which I think is probably related, once she is started with the clutch pulled all the way in and placed in first or neutral doesn't matter, the moment I turn the throttle, the engine immediately shuts off. It will start up afterwards but when I say immediately, I mean it immediately shuts off.

What do you all think is going on here?

Thanks

Frank

I'd check the clutch & sidestand switches- it doesn't sound obviously like them, but they will kill the bike if malfunctioning.

Quick guess. Sidestand switch is sticking. Use WD40 to clean it and make sure it comes fully out.

Could someone please tell me exactly where the sidestand switch is located. Obviously it's just near the stand itself but could I have a few details?

Thanks Again

Frank,

Please see #9 at the lower right hand corner. This is the sidestand switch.

You say once it starts any movement on the throttle kills it? Has the TPS been replaced?

That's Throttle Position Sensor to you and me frankw case you don't know.
Yes, the TPS has been replaced.
Frank,

At this point I'd probably disassemble the right switch gear assembly and look for a broken or shorted wire. Does it quit like you flipped the kill switch off?

Those contacts CAN get dirty.

Frankw,

All excellent suggestions. Also check to be sure the battery cable connections are very clean. Clean with baking soda/water mix, dry, and roughen with emery cloth, tighten securely. Dirty connections can mimic a bad battery.

Sounds like possibly 2 separate problems. Let us know what you find.
