My dealer said my 04 has "too much noise" coming from the valves. It's an 04 with 16K. He called Yamaha and they sent parts. I was surprised to see they sent new valve guides etc but not cylinder head. Then he said he needed a week becaude he needs work from a machinist. I said to him I have no idea how to fix the thing. It's your dime and I have the warranty 3 more years so if it's screwed up, it'll cost Yamaha even more. He said he was confidant it'll be OK. But now I'm worried. What does a machinist have to do with fixing the tick from exhaust valve guides?

The guides need to be removed and the new ones put in, They may have to grind the valves and seats to seat them, They may replace the seat? He may want to check the head as long as its off. There are a few things a lot of shops send out to have done.

The valve guides need to be pressed out and the new ones pressed in and then reamed. You WANT this work to be done by a machinest or qualified head shop. Don't sweat this. A new head just throws a new variable into the equation and if you don't need it, its not doing you any good.

I would find out who is doing the work though and check up on their reputation, but I'm paranoid that way.

Thanks. I appreciate the encouragement. The Service guy told me the shop is extremely reliable and has lots of experience doing these kind of things. I'm more calm know.
