I haven't seen that one before. I think Dainese was first to publish on this type of garment. While I like the concept I am concerned about inflation time. I notice the test data was performed on a pre-inflated garment and they claim inflation in "less than a half-second." Compared to explosive air bag inflators (70 milliseconds IIRC), a half-second is a long time. I seem to recall bad things (impacts) happening in 0.1 to 0.2 seconds in test-dummy videos. Anyone have better data?

Anyway, I assume explosive inflation is out because action = reaction probably means some harm to your body. Real reason may be cost or illegality of a worn explosive device!

The sight says it takes a 55lb pull to activate the system, so if you forget to untether you probably would pull the bike over before the thing went off :) Anybody seen a price on these things?

Friend of mine here has one.... (speak up, will you....I know you are on the forum, too)

Interesting idea, they have some demo videos in the shops here.

I think the impact is for hitting the ground, not necessarily for other vehicles hitting you, etc. So the 1/2 second should be sufficient for that. I saw an article recently on the Honda airbag which inflates in front....I think that is the explosive type for front collisions.

Does this mean I can get double usage from it ;) ....& get rid of my mustang survival suit that I use boating??? :yahoo:

I would fear that type of system would cause you to tumble instead of slide. I'd rather slide on leathers, than have that thing blow up, and me start tumblin around.

Seems only a matter of time before the safety-crats get hold of this idea and try to make it mandatory - they won't be able to resist this opportunity to save us from ourselves. <_<

Well, purely from a physics standpoint tumbling is better, as you slow down faster if you're rolling. And sliding on one spot can get very, very hot. Though rolling around and whacking various limbs on pavement doesn't sound fun either....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....so the debate is on. Which is better? Rolling and breaking all four limbs to pieces, facing severe arthritis and weeks or months of rehab with a lifetime of chronic pain OR facing repeated skin graft surgeries to place a little hyde on your *** that you left on the street followed by chronic scarring and disfigurement from the surgeries and the fact that they couldn't get all of that nylon liner from your suit picked off of your skin as it melted to you on your slide?

No way tumbling is better. Tumbling opens yourself up to other injuries with your limbs flailing all over the place. You want to slide, hence people use leathers as the best abrasion resistance. very hot vs. broken isn't a hard decision to make....

This is cordura (or something similar), so that should not lend itself to tumbling on it's own, or at least any more than normal cordura clothing.

Backpacks, hip packs, etc. would induce roll, which is why I think it is best to avoid wearing them while riding. (of course I do wear them, especially commuting).

CNN Money had some more info on the company behind the product a couple weeks ago:

Re: Prices, most of the jackets are between 3-400 dollars.

You should be able to read the numbers on this site (maybe....depends on your browser encoding I guess):

Prophetic?

Since we no longer need to shift our bikes, and since the throttle is becoming just a "suggestion" to the on board computer, and we have ABS and TCS and every other acronym under the sun, it's really only a matter of time before we are no longer allowed to influence the operation of our cars and bikes at all. If our future bike/navigation system somehow fails us and we wind up on our ***, the aribag suit comes into play. And don't worry about the flailing arms and legs, this is a new technology. Soon they'll perfect a way to wrap you in a straightjacket while the damn thing inflates, preventing your appendages from getting injured while you bounce down the road like the michelin man.

How's that for prophetic? Man, that sucks, what a fugly picture. Hope I'm dead before any of that **** comes to pass. Think I'll put my leather helmet on and go ride my Norton in the dark. The headlight on that thing is kinda like holding a Bic lighter out in front of you while ya ride!

End hijack, resume your normal program please.

On the positive side, if the bike takes over completely, some of us will see higher lean angles than we normally run...
