I have spent considerable time the past two days in the service department helping with the assembly and prep of the first 4 FJR's and this is what I have noticed.....

The new inner panels under the instument panel are fairly tough to install and will be just as hateful to remove as the headlight adjustment knobs are located in each one. The is a very small screw that has to be remove to get the knob off before the panel can be removed. They did however switch over to the same reusable rivet in all locations instead of having one type here and another type there.

The battery is still located in the same place, but the panel covering it is considerebly easier to remove. This is good! The area under the instrument panel is now chock full of relays and molex plugs along with the wiring harness and the headlight adjusting cables. This will make running wires a pain in the contraption!

The windshield is all new and the "W" cover now covers all the screws. It will take the aftermarket companies a while to design one that will work as the windscreen has odd shaped notches cut into the shield that the "W" locks into to hel hold it in place. The adjustable handlebars are easy to adjust and a "Stem Stand" or "TechMount" for the earlier generation will work fine for mounting radar detectors, gps, etc.

The seat latch took a while to figure out to remove the front seat as you have to remove the rear seat then reach your index finger into a slot and trip a lever to release the rear of the front seat. It goes from high to low in a matter of seconds once the plastic cover is removed from the receiver for the high position. The seat is considerable flatter and firmer than the previous models and this is very good! When the seat is in the high position, it tends to rock side to side a little as it is not planted on the subframe all the way around like it is when in the low position. No big deal!

The saddlebag mounts are now a part of the muffler bracket and just has a rubber damper on the protrusion the the bottom of the bag mounts on. The bags now have a positive "pop" when the mounting handle is placed in the latched position much like the mechanism is "camming over" when it's pushed all the way down. This way you will know for sure the bags are latched on the bike fully.

I rode mine home this evening and now gone is most of the negative back pressure when the windscreen is raised. I rode mine with the seat in the high position and the windshield down as I prefer my head to be more in the airstream for venting in my helmet. It doesn't seem to generate as much noise off of the windscreen as previous models.

The mirrors allow a good view to the rear. The handling is pretty typical of the FJR and I didn't notice any real difference compared to older models. The instruments are easy to read and the gear indicator is a definite plus. The turn signal indicators are very small and fairly well hidden so you will have to make a habit of hitting the cancel button after every turn. I don't understand why this model doesn't have self cancelling turnsignals!

I haven't fooled with the fairing adjustments, but it appears to fairly straightforward. As I have more time to look the bike over, I will post more information.

Best regards,

Great report - makes it even more exciting to be a "waiter" (would you like some pie with your coffee? :D )

Can't wait to get mine.

Thanks for the info Tony. The wisdom you supplied here is most welcome. Could eliminate some headaches for all us newbe's later on. And congrats on the new FJR. I'm expecting the call any time. PM. <>< :D

Tony,

At this time I am pleased to be living and riding vicariously through this forum with you. I visited my dealer today and was told, "the last 10 days in Aprii! " Until then, I will wait patiently and keep ordering new farkles and dreaming about that day, just a few weeks away.

Thank you for your posts and insight, it is very much appreciated by all of us!

Ride safe! :)

You didnt say anything about the shifting yet??!?!?  Is it the Automatic?  How is it?
The AE's are not going to be delivered for some time.

Thank you Tony for your report. I will be interested to hear how the gearing change effects acceleration. After it is broken in, of course.

These are the "A" models as the "AE" won't be available to me until May.

One thing I did forget to mention was the brakes. The jury is still out as to whether I like the linked setup. The rear brake feels a little vague, but the front feels like the previous model. I have been riding my FZ1 since my '05 FJR is gone and this and the fact that they are not bedded in may have something to do with this feeling. I will know more as I get more time on it.

The front brake calipers now sport four (4) pads per caliper. that's right four of them at a retail price of about $65.00 per caliper! I am going to be curious how the pads wear since they are linked to the rear and actuate just two of the pads on the left front.

Also, there is a lot more room under the seat now for electronics such as intercoms and fuseboxes.

Best regards,

Tony

Thanks Tony,

It really helps to hear this information. Taking your time to do this is really apprectiated by a lot of us waiters.

Tony, I'd like to say Thanks for your support of this forum, and the information you post here.

Having read your impressions of the 06, I'm even more anxious to get mine, which should happen soon - depending upon what I hear today, I may have my 06 as early as tomorrow.

This seems like a lot of assembly for a Japanese bike. Did you do extra work, or is this required for assembly?

I thought it was just the front wheel, windscreen and maybe the handlebars.

Interesting, all that forward area was completely assembled when mine was decrated last Friday night. Had to access the battery to charge and install the Gerbing wires. Other than that looked pretty simple to get her setup.

Managed a bit over an hour for my second ride last night and definately enjoyed her. Will need bar risers and probably a better shaped saddle for myself; altho 5 years ago she would have been fine as is. Shifting is good, brakes are strong and new engine is VERY willing to move! Yup: FUN! Glad I bought my second FJR as my overall impression is more favorable to the '06 than my '03. Enjoy these new bikes!!! DFO :D

Thanks for the info!

It looks like I'm going to be heading to SD to visit Ted at Southbay Motorsports, TOMORROW! Ted said I was #1 on the list to receive thier FJR.

I'm actually excited now. :bleh:

Hey, InsaneK9,

I may see you there !!! I'm #2 on his list.

You missed the part of moving the lower plastic piece that wraps around the storage box back from the low position to the high position. That eliminates the rocking of the seat when in the high position.

Tom

Your report makes me glad I decided to wait it out for an '06 even though I missed a lot of riding time, just somebody tell me why they decided to screw with the turn signals, I really liked those big flaming arrows
