I just got this in the mail and the instructions are lackluster at best. It called for me to drill holes in the tail section and there are supposedly existing nuts in there for me to bolt into. Before I put 2 holes in my bike, has anyone installed this mounting plate and have some advice?

Having to drill those holes is the reason I didn't order the backrest from PCA. It might be best to try and return this backrest to PCA or sell to another member who doesn't mind drilling their rear fender. I understand completely as I wasn't about to drill holes for a backrest that isn't even really for me. (Its for the significant other of course). Good news though....A forum member named Gary (username: garauld) makes backrests for all year model FJRs.

Gary offers a couple different backrest pads and the cost is $169 shipped for the Gen 1 backrests. I ordered one last week and it was shipped on Monday. (waiting on it to arrive). Here is Gary's profile: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/user/371-garauld/

This backrest does not require any drilling. Send him a PM if you are interested and he will help you out.

Here are a couple of pics.

Patience is a virtue. Sometimes the forum runs a tad bit slow so give it a chance to show your post. I thought someone was PWI, but saw that you're a new (and possibly in a hurry) member. Welcome and hope you get the help you need with the backrest. My better half uses our GIVI topcase to keep her from sliding off so I can't offer any advice on that mounting system.

Yeah sorry about that. I have never used the forums from my phone before. Accidentally posted multiple times.

I'm not sure if it is due to your year of bike, but my PCA backrest on my 09 was a bolt on application. I purchased two different plates (one for just mounting the backrest and one for mounting an additional piece of luggage - larger plate). Both of these plates use the three bolts already fastened on the FJR tail section. If it was me I'd call PCA and ask them to offer what is needed to install the backrest. You shouldn't have to do any drilling... If you do, like others' have said, return it.

The following adapter kits are required for 03, and 04-05 FJR's (Gen 1).

On the Gen 1 fenders, there is only 1 hole on the back fender. Therefore it requires that you drill 2 holes in your rear fender in order to mount the PCA backrest.

As far as I know, Gen 2 FJR's have 3 bolts in the rear and do not require drilling.
