I just purchased a Garmin Zumo 550 and I wanted to know if anyone has "step by step" instructions to hardwire for a 08 FJR. I am not very mechanically inclined so the more detail the better. Thanks! :D

 
Where do you live KMAC? The reason I ask is someone might offer to help you get it mounted and wired up correctly.

I am VERY technically challenged- however, this is EASY :yahoo:

You need to purchase the power cable to hook to the battery. Here is one vendor- but there are many sources (https://www.westcoastmall.net/0101086100-motorcycle-power-cable-zumo-p-3950.html?osCsid=c70fb76e9457fc0958fde9e7a8f9e457).

I just routed the wire down along the handle bars and towards the battery using black zip ties to secure along the way. Leave enough slack so when you turn you don't stress the cable. Directly hook the positive (red) and negative (black) wire ends to the corresponding battery terminals. And Voila- you're done.

The also sell a cable with a cigarette lighter end that could be plugged into your glove box outlet, and then you can run the wire out the bottom of that and up the frame toward the handle bars.

The Zumo 550 is awesome!

John, That does sound too easy. The kit already comes with the power cable so I am all set there. Is the battery easy to get to? Thanks! Kevin

I'd suggest using a switched power source so you don't have to worry about leaving it on accidentally. Many of us mount an accessory fused power block under the rear seat and use a relay to switch it on or off, then wire our accessories to that. There are lots of threads detailing this approach.

What he said.

Fuzeblock and Zumo were just meant for each other. Power cable w/Zumo has plenty of length to reach the back of the bike so you can mount Fuzeblock anywhere you like.

You can read in your owners manual how to get to battery.

One word of caution however you approach this - always disconnect the negative terminal wire (black) from battery before doing any electrical work. Good luck.....

You don't need a switched powerblock to make sure you don't run the battery down. Just pull the GPS when parked for an extended length of time, like say, overnight. You may want to do that anyway, for security purposes, and my Zumo rides a lot in other vehicles, meaning it is never on my Feejer when I am not riding it.

 
The Zumo doesn't really pull that much power anyway. I have left mine on for hours with no ill effects on the battery charge. So, the simple direct connect works for me.

However, I do understand the need for a switch for other more power draining accesories- like heated vests ect.

Hooking to the battery is as simple as turning the screw, placing wire under lead, and tightening again.

Why not hook it up and use it while considering if you need a switch?
