Hi

Sorry if this was already answered before but I couldn't find anything.

I want to spend my holidays in the US and buy here a used motorcycle, maybe even another FJR. Simple question: Anybody knows where to get insurance? I only need 5 or 6 weeks duration. My driving records are clean although I doubt this can be checked.

I have an US drivers license from Arkansas although it expired 10 years ago.

Any ideas?

OK here in Connecticut. You need to carry insurance, at all times if you have a registration of any kind. The cheapest way is if you have a CT drivers lic. with MC endorsement. Your other option is an international DL, but the insurance costs a little more because they automatically give you 2 points for international DL. So just start a policy, pick the payment plan with the lowest down payment, and then cancel after the 5 or 6 weeks and return the plates to motor vehicle. Or have an American friend open a policy for you with him excluded and you as an additional driver, make up a fake internatoinal DL # for yourself cuz there is no way of verifying it anyway. And just hope you never get pulled over by the cops, they will give you a ticket, at least if you get into an accident you will be covered. I know this because I work in an Insurance office and that is how we do it for the illegals (non-Americans) This type of practice will continue untill the government gets their head out of their ass, and does some kind of immigration reform. Good luck I hope this helps..

Thanks Aldawg,

Thanks a lot for the info. Do I have to get a new registration or is it carried over from the previous owner? Registration = Title?

I do certainly want insurance, the risk is simply too hot. Here on my vehicles I have all kind of insurance that covers anything, from 3rd party unlimited damage to theft and fire.

So if I have the title I go to an insurance company and simply ask for a standard insurance? Don't I have to give a resident adress? Or social insurance number?

International drivers licence is no problem, I almost always have that one. I wonder if I can simply show my expired Arkansas drivers license and get better rates?

Thanks

Alain

Sorry for the delay. Registration only carries over if it's from a family member. Go to an ins. agency, get started with at least general liability, then you can add on comprehensive, and collision (full coverage) Some agency's also do registration (we do it for 50 $) If you use your International DL you wont need a social security number (SSN), but you may need to if you use your Arkansas ( thats if they don't catch the expiration date)

The Int. DL just adds 2 points to your policy. It's like buying a policy with a speeding ticket, it just costs a little more.
