Can I get a unanimous "shop around" in your market? Come on everyone, sing it with me...

In all seriousness, this thread (while admittedly should have been in the, uh, Insurance portion of this forum) has been quite helpful. Personally, I plan on calling around to all the companies mentioned here, starting Monday.

Thanks everyone. ;)

I guess it really depends on where you live. I pay 330. a year through Geico, full coverage(have loan on bike) 250 deductable.I live in Wisconsin close to Milwaukee.Another place that was real cheap was

bike-line.com.

I had just the opposite quotes, progressive was the highest at around 1500.
I called Bike-Line on Thursday to get a quote on my GL1800/A. I pay $840 a year for my 2003 GL1800/A through State Farm and was quoted $1400 a year through Bike-Line.

I asked the agent about < $500 and he told me no-one who lives in Texas quoting insurance less than that with Bike-Line has PIP or Uninsured / Under insured Motorists.

Best Regards,

Shane

I think alot depends on the state in which you live. I live in Alabama, have Geico insurance, but bought the FJR in Georgia. Georgia law requires proof of insurance, and therefore, the dealer couldn't allow the bike to leave without proof first. (not dealers fault)

I called Geico, told them I was purchasing a new bike and wished to transfer my policy from my old bike (I also have 2 cars with Geico), and that the dealer needed proof of insurance. All done in less than 10 minutes. The dealer was astonished at the speed and efficiency. Said that responses from insurance companies were typically very slow.

Policy cost: Less than $300. However, I always decline "uninsured motorist" coverage. It only pays my medical bills incurred from an accident if the other person is at fault and they are uninsured or underinsured, and then it only kicks-in after my primary health insurance has been maxed-out. My primary health insurance has a $1,000,000 cap.

The "unisured motorist" constitutes a very LARGE portion of the premium. Something you may want to consider dropping, depending on what type of health insurace coverage you may have.

:haha: And yes, that is my "I GOT AN ***-SPANKIN'" avatar. :D

Uninsured / Underinsured motorists also pays for LOSS WAGEs - I don't know about you, but if someone hits me and I am unable to work for a while, LOST WAGES is going to add up real QUICK!

In california if you have a MC license and are insured all you have to do is show your proof of insurance card for your existing bike and you can drive away. You have by law 30 days to transfer new bike onto your policy.

I didn't think the "unisured motorist" part of my policy addressed wages. I will have to go back and review-that could change everything. I don't want to use the leave time I have earned at work without compensation.

Thanks, Shane, I will have to check that one out.

Call Allstate. They were giving bike insurance away this summer.
Allstate will not write MC policies in Cali anymore. Don't matter if you have your house and cars insured with them, either. They opted out of our litigious state a number of years ago...
On Long Island, Allstate has decided that it is no longer wise for them to write homeowners policies figuring that we are due for a New Orleans type hammering in the near future and they want to minimize their risk of having to shell out to many clams for overpriced real estate....Seems to me that they have sucked as much money out of their policyholders as they could over the years and now want to run away with their tail between their legs when it looks like they may have to give back. I would love to hear how many of our New Orleans brothers and sisters didn't sustain any wind damage according to Allstate.

Scab,

That is why I carry it. The only reason I also carry PIP (which in itself is expensive option) is that if you go down, you already know you will be getting a check for PIP.

Insurance premiums!! I just did this drill. I live in Houston, my wife and I did the MSF, we belong to a ride org (not sure if it is Wing or Hog because we never go to either), we will be 60 this year, and have no tickets or accidents in the last ten years. At Progressive, the 05 FJR was $650, the 05 Road King was $550, the 05 Deluxe was $550, and the 06 Ridley was $1200. Yikes! I got a supervisor at Progressive on the phone. He said they do not like limited production bikes and to call Dairyland. I called Dairyland and they wanted $550 per year for the Ridley. I placed the Ridley with Dairyland and asked “out of curiosity” what is an 05 FJR per year, and he said $1200. What a drill.

Oh, the insurance game! Texas, I'm sad to say, is either worst or next to worst, along with New Jersey, for insurance. Home, car, bike, boat, trailer, plane, whatever. Mostly it's because the Texas Department of Insurance OWNS the legislature and the governor.

The two states take turns raping their respective insurance-buying populations. There's no way to win. Pay it and be legal or drive without and take your chances. No other alternatives.

I'm with State Farm, have been since 1979. I pay $640 per year on the FJR, minimum coverage, no UIM, high deductables. The Cobra is $1,200 per year, also minimum coverage and no UIM, $1,000 deductable. The house is around $1,000 per year, and the other vehicles together cost another $1,200 or so per year.

Let me see, wtf is the total? What? Over $4K! *********! And don't have a ******* claim, or it goes up! ****! My blood pressure is climbing again! I think I'm jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj;lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

bike-line can suck my hairy ***. i had them for years and made one claim. it wasn't until then they they pulled a stunt that cost me double my deductible. they said i was covered for accessories up to $1000. when i included something in the claim, they excluded it because it wasn't itemized in the policy. i've carried coverage on many bikes with many companies over the years. the SOP is to only require itemization once you exceed the default value in accessories (when getting a rider for the excess).

Dairyland verified with me when i moved to them, that their practice was like everyone else's. They said they didn't need a list unless the value was over their default $3000 coverage for accessories.

Bike-line were weasels and lost multiples of that $250 in lost premiums from me over their back stabbing. In the long run it was better for me because Dairyland was better coverage, less expensive, and have better customer service.

bingeaux

you can be insurance poor if not careful - and not gain anything from the overlapping coverage. health insurance and wage protection can be acquired through less costly venues than your bike insurance.

Dairyland. Had it covered before I went to pick it up. When Progressive was quoting everyone $1600 a year, Dairyland covered me for $50 more than my 98 Wing ($550). The next year it dropped to $450. And now it's $275 a year.
100/300/50 w/250 deductible on full coverage and $3000 in accessories before you need to get an accessory rider.

The trick it so compare it to a Concours or R1100RT or K1100LT when talking to them. Don't let them go wandering around and find idiotic marketing hype like "SUPERSPORT touring" to color their perceptions.

--update--

i don't carry pip because i have health and life insurance through a different vehicle. carrying it through bike insurance is more costly and redundant if you have the appropriate coverage elsewhere. if you carry duplicate policy coverage you'll only get paid once and the insurance companies can also start a fight over who pays them back from which pot of cash.

Look up The Hull Agency out of Ft. Worth and call them if you want for a quote. I've handed out that contact more than once in the past.
I go through Dairlyland also (with them 5 years no claims) - ranges from around $250 - $310 per year for full coverage per bike (1100 V*, Roadie & Warrior). I called them for an 06 FJR when I ordered mine and they quoted me $2,500 - seems they didn't have any data on any 06 bikes. When I priced insurance on an 05 instead it dropped back down to the $300 range - WHEW!

Uninsured or underinsured pays for more than just healthcare - it also covers the replacement cost of the vehicle. My wife was in our miata several years ago and got hit by a van which knocked her into on-coming traffice and took out another car. Both the miata and the other car were totaled - the guy had the state minimum for collision - $15k - the miata alone was worth that. His insurance gave us each $7500 - my un/underinsured kicked in the difference. It was well worth it IMHO. Especially here in Texas where there are a lot of drivers who don't speak the english language. Funny thing was when I got to the scene they had an interpretor taking a statement from the driver of the van - I was suprised to find out he even had the minimum amount of insurance required.

I have found GMAC to have the best price in Norcal. I did a google search and found every one else to be much more. Tell them you read rider magazine or that you own a GM car or truck.

I have state Farm also, 50/100/50, I pay 1200.year for:
05 FJR $300

04 Nissan Titan 4x4 $900

I dont think thats too bad.

No tickets,accidents, Age 32
I'm pretty close to yours but we have a couple additional vehicles. Erie insurance on the 4 wheel vehicles. Geico for the FJR. 50/100/50 on the bike, 100/300/100 on the Titan. I live in rural Lancaster county, Pennsylvania

05 FJR ABS $380 full coverage

04 Titan 4x4 $650 full coverage

95 Taurus SHO (liability only) $225

99 Escort (liability) $225
