Interested in the stiffy kit for a 2016 FJR. We are looking at Shad 58X top box and hear there were potential sub frame cracking issues.

Anyone confirm or have a stuffy kit for sale?

If you can't get one, the Givi SR357 rack provides better support than the OEM.
You would have to investigate whether it would work with the Shad case.

Just to be clear, does the SR357 fit a Gen 3? All the more reason to find me a Gen 3 :giggle:
As far as I know, the Givi SR357 fits all Gen II and Gen III+
You can have a look on their site. https://giviusa.com/

I don't know if it will accommodate the Shad case or not. You may need some sort of adapter plate but you should check with Shad or Givi.

On my 2022 I just replaced the stock plastic yamaha luggage with the yamaha rear rack which is reinforced aluminum...the way it attaches to the bike eliminates the need for the stiffy kit plus I happen to like how it looks more
I did the exact same thing on my '21, then installed the Shad 58X. I did order the additional Shad aluminum mounting plate and mounted that to the Yamaha aluminum rack. Spaced the Shad plate back about 3/5 inch, and it fits like a glove.

What he said! 🔝🔝🔝

Appreciate the feedback. Can someone share a pic of the Yamaha aluminum rack and mounting set up?

Because I've heard of and seen this issue even with someone I know, I'm wondering now - mine is an '18. Is this issue for all model years?
I have a Givi with the tubular mount that attaches to the frame on 2 bolts just around and under the pillion seat, and on the two mounting bolts just behind the pillion. The mounting/attaching is very similar to the stiffy kit IMO. See pic below.
Anyone known to have had the issue with this kit? Is this sufficient?
Where is the typical weak point on the subframe to look for the issue?

Thanks

Same issue for all Gen II and III+
You appear to have the Givi SR357 rack which is more robust than what comes on the bike and should be better able to handle the weight without cracking the subframe. Not sure if it is as good as a stiffy kit or not...

I remember reading that according to Gerauld if you have the SR357 you don't need his Stiffy Kit. One or the other. Just keep Googleing it until you are satisfied.

I'll try and take a pic of mine this evening. Are you in VA? Near Richmond? If so, I can show you mine in person.
Thanks thats generous. I am in northern VA. Like to hit mountains here and WV. Wanting to do a road trip to KY, SC and in between and need more luggage space than side bags alone.

Liked the idea of the expandable trunk as the 50 L on my FJ looks ugly, huge and out of place without the saddle bags but like the storage and convenience of the larger trunk. Not generally a huge fan of the way trucks look, but like the option to allow a passenger to bring a change of clothes ;-) or lean back for longer highway stretches without risking damage to subframe as some others have reported.

From old pics i have seen… cracks are directly under the top case where the 3 main rear vertical bolts go. That aluminum bracing. That area gets much torquing at a few angles. Fyi- My bike came with the yam 39L matching case and the black plastic yami adapter. I just finished installing the better Yamaha heavy duty , all aluminum rack/case mount capable to handle yami 50L. But don’t plan on getting a 50L. I simply hope to never have cracking. Fyi- the instructions showing symbols , show do not use bags and top case at same time. Making me think, I just installed this thing WTF is going on here??? FYI - my 39L w/back pad weighs 15#. A givi 47 weighs 10#. The yamaha is a heavy pos. Maybe due to its multi-latching design. Something you need to see to believe. Maybe I should have gone givi everything. Oh , i also have a new givi-kappa 357 mount. Cheers

Thank. I'll monitor this going forward, the pics are very helpful. I'm kind of surprised that Yamaha never addressed this. When Honda had issues with the gen 1 Goldwing GL 1800's subframe (at about the time the the FJR was born), they addressed the issue and recalled them for a fix within a couple of years - replaced the subframes. That was the end of the one.

Shad 58X closed in 42l mode, open in 58l mode, Yamaha aluminum rack with the Shad aluminum mounting plate and under the rear seat with the detail of the Yamaha rack mounting points.

Been working and now on a small trip, thanks for the replies and help so far.

On road doing shorter sub 320 mile days. Currently in Greenville to visit Ivan’s shop then off to the Dragon, possibly Cherohala and then visit some folks in the TN area before heading back to NOVA.

Question

With the Yamaha aluminum mount I see more bolts holding it on than mount points on the bike. The pictures for the part do not show anything but the main part. Will someone confirm there are additional brakes that hold it on and account for the two extra bolt locations?
