Intermittent problem starting Gen 1

It'd be great if you can stop by and advise the shop of the issues I've had with the starter. I'll update when the starter get to Rick's.

I've shared emails with Maria at Ricks. Is she the blue-eyed beauty of which you speak?

Heard from Ricks this afternoon. The armature in the starter is toast, and can't be re-built. Will have to order a new starter. Sorta disappointing since the bike only has 18,000 miles, and has shown symptoms since I bought it with 8500 miles. But it makes sense that it probably was defective from the factory, rather than worn parts.

 
This topic should be linked to from the Bin o' Facts (First gen at least, maybe both).

It gives all the needed troubleshooting steps of identifying a faulty starter with no extraneous BS.

Last time I was there Rick was out at an event and without his OK they didn't want pictures taken...

They didn't want pictures taken of either the staff -or- the facility. I offered to take pictures and make them famous on the internet (and perhaps one person would have made nice wallpaper ;) )

 
Does anyone recommend a place to buy a new starter at reasonable price? Thanks in advance.
There he goes again - pulling the thread back on subject. Its always about "his" starter and not what a few are clearly asking for. :)

It is related to the discussion, did you not see the discussion about rebuilding and buying a new unit within the thread? Never mind.

 
I wonder how many seconds the starter motor can operate before the internal wiring insulation begins to break down from too much heat?

When I've synced the throttle valves I've started the engine several times in the span of 15 or 20 minutes. I may have been killing my starter motor by getting the internals too hot.

I think I'd worry about meteor collisions first.

OK, a current thread linked back to this one, so I'm not really resurrecting such an old discussion--but--I may be facing a similar problem to the one the OP described (sounds like it), but fall short in the skills needed to follow along with Ionbeam's diagnostics, or pull and rebuild my own starter. Or at least I'm scared to even try. My recurring nightmare is having a lot of parts sitting out on a bench with no idea what I'm looking at or how they go back together. Or loosening the wrong screw and having lots of pieces of something fly apart with a kind of a "sproinnng" sound, rolling under things, dropping down inside the engine, etc. So I try to stay away from all that stuff.

So here's my question (and it's an easy one, for someone who's done it). Having heard how expensive a starter is, and what a big job accessing it and everything is, HOW big, and HOW expensive? If I end up having to get a new starter and having it installed, what kind of damage can I anticipate? Thanks.

 
Access to the starter requires removing the entire intake system: fuel tank, airbox, fuel rail, throttle bodies. That involves a couple of small coolant pipes for the cold start system, and of course the throttle cables. What it would cost to have that done I couldn't even guess, because I've never paid anyone to work on my bike.......

Well hell, that looks pretty straightforward. I don't know why I was worried.

Maybe I'll send a pic of the counter girls at Roseville Yamaha. They're all pretty hot, in a barely-out-of-high-school way. I did get an answer by PM--around $600 for the whole job, if it turns out to be needed. In case anybody else wondered. But DAMN, every time I write them a big check, I think "maybe THIS will be the end of it."

The good news Mike, is that is all the same work that you have to do to clean up those road spooged throttle bodies. I'm sure that yours would benefit from a good thorough hand cleaning by now.

Definitely check out all other possibilities before committing to it. But it really isn't that bad of a job, say as compared to splitting the cases to repair a shift drum or something...
