My first night ride on my "new to me" 2004 FJR tonight and I notice that the far right of the tach and the far left of the speedo are not well lit. Looks like possibly a light out? Is this something that a guy with a little bit of guts and a touch of mechanical ability can take apart and change the bulb?

Second, my "glove box" on the left side of the dash does not open well, I have to pry a bit to get it open. I read that I must be in neutral and the key on t open this. These don’t seem to make any difference. Any suggestions?

Thanks Tim

I've had the same dash bulb out for...not sure how long, since I avoid riding at night. It is too common with these but a relatively minor failure. I've seen numerous threads on this forum that deal, in the most precise detail, with the fix, pictures and all. It is huge work for a tiny repair. That's why mine remains out.

There are also threads dealing with reluctant glove boxes. But I'm a search incompetent so I'll leave that up to you or other members to help you find the links.

Same two problems on my new to me '04 that I bought last year. I haven't got around to fixing the light yet (it is the third one over, so I have trouble seeing the high end of the speedo, and the gas gauge at night). There are four of them and it takes some work to get to them. I plan on replacing all four at once. I took apart the glove box and removed the solenoid and latch assembly, replacing it with one from Home Depot.

Have fun. It's a great bike, and the money you save buying used makes up for the small issues you inevitably run into.

You don't have to replace the latch, unless you want locking capability. Many owners just unplug the solenoid, then tape off the plug. That may not be your issue though, if it's not working right in neutral and with the key on. The small pieces in the latch can get broken, and you can't buy those parts separately. The assembly can be had for about $80 from some of the vendors listed in the vendor section here.

The lights are $4 or so each, and it's not that bad a job, just more involved that you would think for silly little bulbs.

If you can unbolt your side panels, you can change the bulbs easily, just take your time and allow for some cleaning while you're there.

FYI - There are 9 of these bulbs, and they are not the same size as the turn signal ones. The other 5 are the indicator lights, which don't get nearly as much use. The two outside bulbs last longer for some reason also. I only replaced the two inside ones on my '04.

I have a couple of instrument lights out on my '05. I bought a set of replacement lamps. They are not cheap. One of these days I'll put them in.

I also have 2 or 3 out on my cluster.

This looks like it's a PITA to replace, so I' going to change them all while I'm in there!

Just ordered the complete kit last week.
