I've been riding since I was 15 or so, I'm now an old f$^ker. My wife started riding with me on her own ride about 15 or 16 years ago. Early on if we rode 300 miles in a weekend it was a "long" ride. As time passed and she got more experienced we just kept riding farther and farther. On our vac this past spring we did a total of 4,800 miles including 600 miles the first day. 4th of July weekend just a little over 1,000 miles. Now she's wondering, "Could we do 1,000 miles in one day?" And I'm asking myself the same thing. It's just something that happened along the journey, can't explain it, it just happened. JB

As a friend told me today "I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you."

I always like road trips when I was merely a caged driver. I would take long drives (600-800 miles) just for the hell of it, and would really enjoy that time. When I got my first street bike I started hearing about the Iron Butt Association, and I was fascinated at the thought of riding 1000 miles in a day. I kept thinking "That's a hell of a lot of miles for one day on a bike" but always wanted to try it. One day I did. I then started enjoying riding long distances and seeing what was out there. The thought of riding to another state for dinner and a tank of gas seemed like fun. I just saw this as a better way of doing what I had already been doing in a cage. I got to ride my bike and I got to just spend the day on the road. :atv:

When I was stationed at Ft. Bragg NC, I used to ride my Suzuki GS650E home to South Jersey for a weekend. Leave Friday night, arrive home early Sat morning. Hang with friends, get a good nights sleep, ride back to Bragg early Sun morning.

Granted that's a 1000 miles in TWO days, but heck, a 6'4" 260# guy on a 650? 500 miles was enough in one day :haha:

I've always wanted to to IBA rides. Now I have a ride that's good enough (for me) and I'm gonna do one...

...soon...

....really.....

I met a guy at a BMW dealer that claimed to have ridden coast to coast. Multple times...

....on a Boss Hosss! :dribble:

Looked up his name on the IBA website and sure enough, there he was.

I'm sure you ment to say "SaddleSore 1000".

The two BunBurner rides involve a 1500-mile route.... either a regular "BunBurner" (1500 miles/36 hours), or a BunBurner GOLD (1500miles/24 hours).

Warchild,,

:headbonk:

yes my bad,,,

SaddleSore 1000 is what I should have said!!

@gasman - my wife and I have had the same experience of longer days and longer tours, but when I started musing about doing a SS1000 this Spring (to FJRTech in WA), her reaction was "NFW pal - you're on your own!"

The FJR 'almost' made it easy, but the magic is in the planning and the details. Like Pierre, I don't like night riding so a BBG is not in my future, but I'm really glad I did the SS. My first 2 hours out of Regina (left at 2 AM), I had the most spectacular Northern Lights show I've seen in many years.

Try it, you'll like it (and if you don't try it, no one will ever really be able to explain it to you).

Although I could never personally ride 1000 miles I have learned to appreciate the IB riders and the information they share with the rest of us. Who better than the long distance riders to give us advice on comfort, auxiliary lighting, tires, fuel management, clothing, proper hydration techniques and diet, along with the many farkles to for navigation, communication, etc., etc., etc.?

They push the envelope of man and machine and we are all better for it. Thank you IBA riders!

I did a Saddle Sore 1000 that became a Bun Burner. I followed up with a Bun Burner Gold on my return. Now I can say "I did them" even though I never applied for the IBA certs.

But my "longest" trip was NYC to Dallas, TX on a Yamaha TW200 with 100# of gear onboard. I took 3 days for that one because the days weren't too long in March, and you don't wanna drive in the mountains at night with at TW200 headlight.

Why did I do those trips? Because I wanted to.

My first IBA 100k rideing time was 17 1/2 hrs with 1 1/2 stopped time gas food pee it was not that hard.Out here on the left coast its not conjested like the right coast :p so we can travel faster than you'all and we can do it on two lane rds as well the just take longer as speed limits are lower than super slabs. My next one is 1500 in 24 hrs :D .

TWN

When I left Sunnyside I did the same another undocumented 1K ride on the way home but my ridding partner met me at 33 & I 5 at Dennysleft at 7am got to Santa Maria at 4am its fun if you got the lights I do now but not quite as bright as WarChilds Eyes of God let me ride behind you at night and you'll see :D :p

Teh, he! Roger, buddy? You had a typo which I was busting on you... 100k is 100,000 miles which, is a ton of miles to put on in under 24 hours! Just having some fun!

And speaking of people busting on people... didn't you report that Bob was having some surgery done? How is he doing?

You need a lot of things to do 1000 mile days.

1) an Iron Butt

2) Determination

3) Desire

4) Time

5) $$$

6) a reliable ride

7) a direction you want to go.

My problem is I get eliminated at 1)...and the rest then don't matter. I've done 800 miles in a day a couple of times--and was miserable by the time I was done. So I lack 3) as well. Circumstances knocks out 4) for me. Having 2), 5), 6) and 7) isn't enough.

A lot of great philosophy here, thanks for the insight. I thought it was just done for the cool license frame.

Mmmmmm lips-n-********, ground up and stuffed in a tube. Just proves that musturd can improve the taste of just about anything

On the subject of ss1000 or other adventures, my advice is 'Don't knock it 'till you tried it." Read Ron Ayers books Against the Clock and Against the Wind.

Although I haven't done it, every year I get the urge to try - before I get too old :(
