Is it still considered a crash

On a related subject, I wish they would stop selling those crappy recaps. I actually saw one of those things let go. Luckily there was nothing next to the truck/wheel. However, had there been, I can assure you there would have been a collision. As you all know, how many times do you see chunks of tire sitting right in the middle of the road? That's a hazard for everyone, especially us two wheeled guys.
Rick
Most of those tire strips you see aren't actually recaps, they're failed tires. If you see steel sticking out the side, it isn't a recap blown off, there's no cord in a recap tread section. It's the actual tire carcass has exploded.

Such failures are usually an overheated underinflated tire, but of course it's pretty hard for a trucker to find one low tire if all he's doing is eyeballing them and looking for bulges, and doesn't have a monitor system. Actually getting in there with a tire gauge? C'mon, who's got an hour and a half to check tires every stop? Or even every week?

I know that overpass... been through there numerous times visiting my sister when she lived in the Woodlands. Sucks about the bike... think it's fixable?

Yes most important that YOU weren't struck. Glad the damage was repaired & at least he stuck around after the collision. Got mixed feeling as you do whether stopping was the right thing to do. Boy Scout in me says yes but cynical side says drive on.
I gotta go with that. I am all about helping....... I am a firm believer that some ******* on a cell phone will try to kill me at least once a day too..... I dunno what I would do till I did it. I stop and help people in my truck all the time. Bike is so very different.......

You are safe... and the missus is getting fixed... Sal that counts

As far as your insurance company goes they MIGHT consider it one but the accident should DEFINITELY not go on you driving record w/ DPS because the vehicle was parked and you were not operating it at the time it was struck..............

I had a good friend killed on an interstate in WI. He had a flat tire (driver side rear) and pulled all the way off the right side to change it. He was completely over the "rumble strips" and partly on the grass. While changing the tire, mr. pickup came by, crossed the rumble strip on the shoulder with both sets of wheels, hit him and the car and killed him instantly. The investigation revealed that my friend had sufficiently pulled off the road and there was not much else he could have done (short of sitting there and waiting). That might have been deadly as well because the pickup hit the car and the passengers in there were severely hurt.

Scary stuff. Be safe out there.

If you're thinking of applying for your Motorcycle Crash Merit Badge, then I'm sorry. This doesn't qualify. You'll just have to try again. It is required that you be on the bike, when the mishap occurs. It doesn't have to be in motion, however. For instance: If you were sitting on your bike, parked in the emergency lane, and the Durango hit you. THAT would qualify. I would like to point out, that it's not always required that you be mounted during the impact. If you were to leap from the bike in the final instant, either while in motion, or at rest, you can make application for your badge, and most of these requests are met favorably.

In any event, the Motorcycle Crash Merit Badge can be the most expensive badge you'll ever recieve. You should consider the relative merits and costs, before attempting this, again. Although many consider the badge worthy and highly desirable, I much prefer the Motorcyclist Saves Drowning Child Merit Badge, myself. It's a little harder to get, but the badge is much more attractive, and you don't even have to know how to swim to be awarded one! Find a drowning child while riding your motorcycle, leap from your bike, and rescue him/her.

Better luck, next time (waaayy better, I hope).

Pulling far as possible off to shoulder is no guarante for safe stop. I just read this in local paper.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — As Bike Week begins in Daytona Beach this weekend, motorists here Friday saw a grim reminder of the need to watch for motorcycles on the road.

Two motorcyclists from the Fort Lauderdale area were killed at 12:50 p.m. Friday while they were stopped on the right shoulder of northbound Interstate 95 ---Authorities said a Miami driver in a Saturn crossed both northbound lanes and crashed into the pair, killing both men and tearing one of the motorcycles in half.

I may drive my van to Bike Week just to see races.

Right! Come to think of it, that's exactly what I was doing. I had just parked the scoot and had lept off it backwards toward the retread. And Durango Man few by beneath me. Too bad I wasn't wearing my helmet cam.

So do I qualify now?

Interesting question to pose. I believe JRO's merit badge info should be enforced and placed in the infamous "bin-o-facts" section. Being a member of the club is a trying and unrewarding endeavor. In the end....it's up to you and what you feel inside to be the correct assumption. Note the use of the word "assumption" as we all know what it leads to.

Sorry I missed this earlier. Glad you're Ok and sorry you tried to be a good citizen and paid the price for it. Durango-Man might have been under the magnetic force of the moon to veer off and hit your bike in the emergency lane.

Did the police check him to make sure he didn't have any purple shrouds and vodka with him???

At least you live to ride another day.

Indeed... Happens, every time. Most folks just can't seem to get their story straight when explaining to cops, insurance investigators, wives, or the merit badge board.

Sounds pretty fishy, to me. From roadside Samaritan, to daredevil glory-seeker?... Uh-huh... However, in the event that you are NOW explaining the actual facts, and to FORESTALL further attempts to obtain this merit, I will concede my own suspicions (providing no one has any objections), and allow this to go through.

Therefore, you are hereby awarded the prestigeous Motorcycle Crash Merit Badge . You are conferred with the right to wear such badge upon your person, display it in any presence, public or private, and to defend it upon your honor. Furthermore, you are now given the right to tell eveybody all about it, as often as you like, wherever you may be, from this day forward, until the end of time.*

Congratulations.

Was stopped at a light with a little corolla stopped behind me. Was on my Valkyrie (showroom perfect) tourer with the bags. All of a sudden I got a huge shove that knocked me over. I stood up and thought somebody had rear ended the now freaked out chick in the Toyota. I threw my helmet out in the field and if I really didn't like jail time there would have been dead bodies all over......sorta J/K but you gear heads know the feeling. I walk up to her window and she also thinks she is going to die, she is tearfully telling me that she turned around to yell at the two brats in the back seat and hit the gas..........whatta ya gonna do.

Word of warning to all especially in Kaleefornia.........we all know she was Hispanic........there's no other choice here.....and I just assumed she had no insurance, none of them do. She whips out an Allstate card immediately and I thought I was in luck for a change. NO CHANCE.....they are smarter than we are.......My bike was rideable so I tooled back home with damage to both bags and a rear fender that is a twisted mess.

Here is what the down and outters in California do.....they sign up for the cheapest insurance they can find.......and get set up for monthly payments......VOILA they have an insurance card.........they make a payment and then forget about it........they still have the card.......you think you're fine, you run down with your totaled vehicle and find out the Insurance company has no clue where these people even are. If you do find them they have nothing and are judgment proof anyway..........$1,500 bucks out of my own pocket later my bike was almost back to new...........

Yeah I'm a big fan of illegal aliens............

No good deed goes unpunished.................with that said, with drivers like that and the ones who cannot stop their runaway Toyotas without calling 911 first.......it's getting spooky out there.

That d-bag actually said he thought the car would flip over if he put it in neutral!?!? People that brain dead shouldn't be allowed to operate motor vehicles.

Mike

Even though I commend you for your efforts of doing a good deed. Living in Texas myself and knowing how the average texan drives, I think I would try to find something with less danger the next time you do a good deed!!

Glad your ok, the bike look repairable and if not, I believe there are lots of 09's left.

Why did it come out of your pocket? Doesn't your insurance cover uninsured motorists? It is part of the standard package here.

My sister inlaw got rear ended here in MA last summer by an illegal. The driver showed his license and insurance card to her and swapped info. She still had called the cops and it turns out the illegal showed a different ID to the police with a different name. You would think that the illegal would have been carted off. "NOPE NOT AT ALL" since we are a sanctuary state he was just let go and continued to drive off without a legal license. "GO FIGURE" Anyway it still cost her $500 for the deductible to get it fixed.

Even if it is a scratch I will allways call the cops. Also been burned in my earlier years.
