I've been thinking about asking this for a while now - so here goes -
I'm a recently retired Scoutmaster - and there are two boys in my troop that are disabled, and live in wheelchairs.
I've posted a bunch of troop pictures here on Smugmug -
Camp Whitsett 2005 pictures
If you move up from this gallery a level, you'll find more pics. You may have to dig about to see them, as they are mixed in with other scouts.
These kids could have joined a 'special needs' troop - but they both elected to join our troop, and they have excelled. They are really neat young men !
What I want to do is see if there is a hack owner (or two) out there that would be willing to show up on a weekend, and take one or both of them for rides - nothing long, say 30 minutes or so - but just to give them the experience.
City of Orange, in Orange County, California.
They would have to be belted in - and then wedged in with pillows (which can be provided) as they can't hang onto anything. They have just enough motor skills to pilot the electric wheelchairs they use. They'd need helmets to wear - communications would be a plus - any ideas would be welcome !
I've discussed this with their parents - and they are cool with it. I've asked them not to discuss it with the boys, until someone commits, and we can put it together.
I'll ask that someone post this on other boards that you may be members of. I'd really like to do this for them before they finish their senior year of high school - as they'll be heading out to college.
Please post any comments, you can PM me if you like.
Thanks So Much, Everyone !!
