Is this a good deal?

Hello guys, as you can see I'm new to the forum. I've been riding for a while, but I'm new to the FJR scene. I've been looking at early Gen II models for about a year and I think I've found a decent bike. This is the first VIN check that I've done just because I'm that confident this is the bike I want. You can find 2006-2008 FJR's with 30-50k miles all over but they are running $6,000-$7500. I found this particular bike with fewer miles 24,619 to be exact, and better condition, for much less money. It's at a dealership in Kansas of all places. According to the report it looks like I'll be the 4th or 5th owner.

I have test ridden this bike and everything feels good. It has a smooth throttle response, brakes, and transmission. The bags are in good shape and everything looks to be in order. Please help me out and give me an honest opinion about this bike. Many thanks!

I'd say that's a good deal. If you end up getting it, I have a lightly used shop manual from my 06, that I might let go for the right price. PM me if interested.

I just bought an '06 with about the same mileage for....$5000. I got new tires and some extras, but it was from a private seller. I think that the bike is a pretty good deal. I have no idea what the trade does to the deal.

When I talked to the dealer they were going to list the Star for $6000 which was my asking price on craigslist. I had a few dealers really low ball me on it, one offered $3000. I figured this was a good middle ground and definitely worth my time to look at the FJR. I'm 5'8 150lbs and everything about the FJR fit better. Even the stock seat was a big improvement over the Mustang on the Star.

I'd say that's a good deal. If you end up getting it, I have a lightly used shop manual from my 06, that I might let go for the right price. PM me if interested.

If the deal goes through I'll send you a pm. Its always handy to have a shop manual around.

While it may be difficult to think about trading a bike that is six years newer for this particular FJR, I doubt you will regret it. I also agree that a $5000 to $5500 valuation for the '06 is about right. I would not hesitate to ask the dealer for some extras, maybe the next service for free, or some accessories you may want.

Jump on it dude. Can better deals be had? Maybe, but not likely this time of year. This is typically the month when great "winter" deals seem to disappear. Remember that pricing is affected by the time of the year. It becomes significantly harder to find those great deals beginning right about now. FWIW, the longer you wait, the less likely it will be to find a better deal, just because of the time of year.

Good miles and decent pricing. If the '06 rings your chimes then go for it...you won't be disappointed with any FJR!

Check the service log folder of the previous owners. A detailed set of logs will show that they took care of it during it's lightly-used life.

You might have a Yamaha dealer run the VIN and check if the Main wire harness had been replaced and other recall/service bulletin. I bought a 06 a month or so ago, and found through the vin..... The harness recall was done, along with some other things.

Just some of 06 issues..

Wire harness-grounding issues

ECU altitude issues

Speedo replacement

Snatchy throttle

That said, I still bought mine... I have had several FJR (9), and there all great!!

Mine has 16,000 smiles on it. I gave $4800. for it.. A lot of bike for 5 grand

It must be good to live in SC. I got my 06 AE with 60k miles for $4300 and I consider it a good deal. It depends quite a bit on local market pricing.

It's a good deal from a dealership. Obviously you could find a better deal from a private seller. That said, then you have to go through the process of selling your current bike and buying the new one. Then you have to pay taxes on the new one. Don't know about where you live but in Texas an even trade is a flat $5 fee, no taxes. That saves you some money and keeps you from giving it to "The man," especially since it looks like "the man" has already collected taxes on this particular bike four times already.

Smitty I called Yamaha and found the following recalls were active:

SUMMARY:YAMAHA IS RECALLING 9,300 MY 2006-2009 FJR1300 MOTORCYCLES. THE INTERNAL SWITCH WIRING COULD BECOME DISCONNECTED. IF THIS OCCURS ELECTRICAL CURRENT FLOW WILL BE STOPPED AND THE ENGINE COULD STALL.

SUMMARY:YAMAHA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 FJR1300 MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM FEBRUARY 2006, THROUGH MARCH 2009. THE GROUND JOINT CONNECTOR OF THE WIRE HARNESS COULD OVERHEAT AND BECOME DEFORMED, POSSIBLY CAUSING AN INTERMITTENT GROUND WIRE CONNECTION. IF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS NOT PROPERLY GROUNDED, THE IGNITION SYSTEM AND/OR OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS COULD MALFUNCTION, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL.

If it hasn't had a problem thus far is there still a chance that this could be a future problem? I'm still going to take it to a dealer right away, but I thought I'd ask. The return trip back home is 180 miles. Anyone know how long the down time would be on this?
