I know of one local rider that felt his tire was splitting along that line and had his tire replaced. The line is intentional and not an issue.
Correction: That local rider did not "feel" his tire was splitting along that line...

It was splitting along that line....

That tire was replaced under warranty (or so I hear

).

...As for what that fine line it? Michelin calls it a "stripe" and says it is for static discharge....
'Someone' was just opening the door for ya, trying not to put words into your mouth kiloword picture. Amazingly, your Michelin link has the same information as the Michelin page I linked to ;)

With the snow we are getting today, thank goodness for an attention diversion thread.

I think I was the only one here so lucky to split a tahr on that stripe. But I still think it is related to the topic of this thread, even if it was a defective tire, it was on the same "Michelin stripe".

45 responses and a promotion to NEPRT (Now Everyone Probably Reads This)! And it's not even a Friday. This evening I went out and colored the line with a sharpie. Any idea how many pens I will need for a 4 day trip?

You can go with one pen...even if you see streaking, it will still be good for awhile yet.

But don't hold it up in the air during a thunderstorm, the plastics will not insulate you from the 1.2 gigawatts, nor will the rubber soles of your sneakers. Best to be sitting in a car while marking your tire in that event.

Actually found this thread interesting. And now my post count doesn't go up one for this fabulous response? The irony of it all.

Come on Mark, everyone knows the 1.21 gigawatts isn't an issue until he hits 88 mph. That's when the flux capacitor goes ape.

Spoken (typed?) like a true post whore. Takes one to know one.

I couldn't sleep last night. I know Wheatie says I should be able to make it on one pen, but it looks like there could be some rain next weekend. The chance of lightning will be higher than usual and what if the ink grounds the bike? Fortunately I found the perfect solution below and I'm all ready to go.

No, that will not work. That tape will insulate the static line from the road and the static will not be able to dissipate. The static charge will build with no path to ground. You could end up with welded bearings, fried electronics and a smoked visor on your helmet.

Of course if that tape is made from the same rubber as the POS Bridgestones that came on my FJR it will be worn off by the time you leave your driveway.
