Is it true that when you use thicker grips, the clutch might not engage well, because the clutch handle is not pulled enough because of thickness of the clutch?

Only if you're trying to use a grip as thick as a roll of toilet paper.

Regardless, it will manifest itself as clutch slip. No slip...no problem.

And remember there's an adjuster on the clutch as well that changes engagement position.

They look to be thinner than a roll of toilet paper..... ;)

However, I think your larger problem is on that webpage that says, "Sorry, this item is not currently available" ;) ;)

Good job of putting it in perspective Matt. :D

I use the large size Hot Grips with Grab On covers on top of them. They measure 1.773 O.D. or about the size of a used roll of TP. No issues in a 100k.
