I have a couple, my favourite is the on-bike with Dave Jeffries. A multiple champion and great guy. At one point he describes a particular flat out bend through a village. He says it is the scariest corner on the circuit and that in practice he rolls off through there but in the race he holds it flat out (185mph). He was killed at that same corner in 2005 (?) on oil left by a previous bike only seconds ahead of him. He hit the wall and died instantly. His bike flew into the air and broke a telegraph pole in half 100 yards further on. The following rider Jim Moodie was unable to stop and was caught round the neck by the wires which were now draped across the road. He was pulled backwards and said later that he was at the point of losing grip on the bars when the wires snapped.
You guys might also like to have a look at Irish open road racing which goes on all season, lots of similar stuff but less publicity. Last year the fastest ever racing lap anywhere was set in the North West 200 in Ireland over 130mph....(average speed).....through towns and villages!!!

Then there is the Manx Grand Prix held on the same course and run in similar format to the TT, but in August, and for lesser mortals (club racers). Just as exciting as the TT but with more elbow room (smaller crowds).

It's strange, the guys who go well on the Island never seem to do really well on closed circuits. They are quite rightly revered as gods of racing with balls of steel. But are often beaten into 8th place in British National level stuff. Are they a different type of racer....or do the real good racers avoid the TT? Barry Sheene refused to ride there when asked to by his sponsors, saying he had bad asthma there when he was a kid and dint want to go back. I spent many happy hollidays there as a kid, a great place to visit, but as the previous poster says....damp.
