Issues with newly acquired 2005 FJR with 10k miles

....damage to the catalytic converters and cause them to brittle and break apart. In turn, small pieces can be sucked into the engine (unlikely on an FJR but I don't know), and score the cylinder walls. That happened to my Nissan 3.5L.
I have to ask....how could chunks of ceramic possibly flow upstream against fairly high pressure exhaust gas and uphill a foot (or more on the Nissan)? Color me VERY skeptical. :glare:
Well on these Nissan VQ35 engines it's happened to a lot of them and is acknowledged by Nissan, the cats are stuffed right into the headers close to the exhaust ports, they overheat and start to break apart and pieces are breathed back into the engine both through vacuum and also through the EGR valve. Remember, exhaust valves have a bit of overlap and breathe in a bit of exhaust gas on most engines.

 
You need to get a second opinion the vibes thing. FJRs do have a rough patch around where you describe so it could be normal. Ask one of your FJR owning mates to ride it and see what they think. My 04 has a rough patch in the 3-4K rpm range but it's done it from new and now has 100K km so it's normal for me at least.

You need to get a second opinion the vibes thing. FJRs do have a rough patch around where you describe so it could be normal. Ask one of your FJR owning mates to ride it and see what they think. My 04 has a rough patch in the 3-4K rpm range but it's done it from new and now has 100K km so it's normal for me at least.

Thanks for the pointer but doing a TBS didn't make any difference IME. The vibration feels like some kind of mechanical resonance. I'm pretty sure Ive seen it referred to by others on here too in the dim and distant past when ticking was all the rage.

Was the TBS a regular one? If so, it was worthless. If the throttle plates were actually adjusted, then that is different.

There are obviously (many) other reasons why you might have vibration. But a ticking valve isn't one of them, so you can rest easy there.
Yes just a regular one. I read the "advanced" tbs thread but I didn't get the impression it made much difference either way. Are you saying it can? I can feel vibration both with no load and load. It's not bad or anything, jsut a slight rough patch.

 
Check your engine/frame bolt are torqued tight... if it has sliders definitely check them.
Yes, that's a good one. I did have that problem once but that is very different to the 3-4K rough patch. I'm SURE others have mentioned this in the past. It can't just be me and the OP that have it.

 
Well on these Nissan VQ35 engines it's happened to a lot of them and is acknowledged by Nissan

Just in case anyone is wondering...

NISSAN RECALL NOS. R3007, R3014, R3015, R3016, R3017. ALSO ON 2002 ALTIMA AND SENTRA VEHICLES, CERTAIN ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE PRE-CATALYST TO OVERHEAT AND DAMAGE THE CATALYST SUBSTRATE. IF SUBSTRATE PARTICLES ENTER THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, THEY COULD SCORE THE CYLINDER WALLS, RESULTING IN INCREASED OIL CONSUMPTION.

not an issue on an FJR with the cats so far downstream, but I was worried about how it was running rough sounding and so rich, I wondered about the condition of his exhaust and cat.

Actually, it is the "regular" TBS that is of limited value in reducing vibrations. The UA TBS has more impact than the regular one. If you've never done one, it is well worth doing. It made an appreciable difference on mine, and many other folks'.
