Yesterday afternoon after I put away the tools and sat on her one last time, the realization hit me. This bike is now a rally bike. I've been taking a number of steps since I bought her in early September. I tend to have 30 minutes or an hour here and there. This weekend's work was enough to put her over the edge. Yahoo! :yahoo: Sorry, I have no pix. I'm not good at taking photos in the middle of a project. I just want to do the work.

Baby Steps:

  • Removal of all the stickers. Even though they gave the bike personality, they are against IBR rules.
  • First mod was the installation of fuses on the existing barrier strip. PO left it all unfused.
  • Installed a Curt Gran Fuzeblock under the seat. Stuffed a 1/2" wire loom full of wires and ran it up the right side of the tank. No switched power yet. Moved Zumo power feed from dashboard Powerlet to Fuzeblock.
  • Sent my tankbag to Linda T for some minor mods.
  • Installed Wild Bill highway pegs (sourced from the forum flea market.)
  • Purchased a longer Touratech arm for the existing stem mount. Also bought a rotating shelf so I can get it out of the sun.
  • Disconnected the Power Commander. Mileage sucked. Left it in place, though.
  • Installed FZ1 mirrors. Wow, what a huge improvement! Major functionality farkle.
So far the bike still looks normal.

  • Installed NLine dash shelf. This took a number of false starts but eventually I worked out all the bits and pieces. Nothing mounted on the shelf yet.
  • Mounted BLM fuel cell over the passenger seat. Not connected yet. Had to modify one of the mount brackets, hole didn't line up.
  • Mounted BLM switch box on the clutch reservoir. Nothing in the box yet.
  • Installed bulkhead fitting for fuel cell. Many thanks to Tom M. for doing the heavy lifting. Temporary routing of fuel line so I can test the damn thing.
  • Replaced the Touratech stem mount with RAM. This system is a keeper.
  • Drilled holes in the clutch switch box to accommodate two Heat Troller knobs.
At this point it's on it's way to being a rally bike, but nothing is actually finished yet.

  • Installed Heat Troller knobs, routed wires properly, wired head of unit. Heat Troller install complete.
  • Re-did fuel line from cell to tank. Located quick disconnect up near the tank. Connected vent and ground wire. Fuel cell install complete.
  • Laid out and installed electronics on dash shelf. From right to left: XM puck, Mix-It, V1 remote audio adapter, V1, Garmin 2610.
  • Wires neatly dressed with strain relief. 2610 wires left in place, though shelf not drilled for mount yet.
  • Using a Posi-Lock, connected the Fuzeblock to the blue/red wire going to the taillight. Switched power for the V1 and MixIt!
And now she's a rally bike. Still to come:

  • Russell seat (ride-in this Friday)
  • 2610 mounted to dash shelf
  • Relocation of the PHID ballasts which the PO improperly located
  • NLine rain box for V1
  • Garauld trunk rack
  • Pelican rear case
  • Star-Traxx wired.
  • McCullough HID low beams installed

All these "should" be done by the White Stag. And then we just ride, ride, ride. :yahoo:

Blah, blah, blah..... if it's not documented, it didn't happen, 'Bro. You know the rules....

To paraphrase a bumper sticker about RUBs.

"60 miles and an extra $6000 doesn't make you a rally rider."

We need pics of actual travel. :tease: It's not really Friday, is it?

I've seen jwhite's pics in other threads and read his ride reports so I know he's serious about rally-ing. :clapping:

But I'm with Warchild, I want a pictorial history to show the progress of getting the bike up to rally form!

Sorry Jer, I'm with WC on this. We need pics, dood!

What time you going to be at Russell on Friday? Maybe we'll stop in on our way down.
8AM appointment. After they take the seat I'm heading over to Weaverville for the Trinity County courthouse, then back to Redding.

I think they're done some time in the early afternoon.

What time you guys heading through? Meet me in Weaverville @10 AM and be in my courthouse pic!

Okay, Okay! Sheesh, what a tough crowd.

Start with the long shots.

Fuel cell. Note the new twist-off cap. Now I can take it off with one gloved hand. Fill both tanks without getting out of the saddle!

Heat Troller control knobs. Saved space on box for another control.

Left side ready for 2610.

Wire path to shelf. The 2610 harness wasn't long enough to route underneath the tupperware, and some other wires ran from dash to Zumo. Just easier to do them all this way. Not the prettiest solution, but functional.

Connectors for heated clothes.

Under the seat. Clockwise from top left: wiring harness to steering head area, blue wire is switched power, red/black wires far right are 2610 harness (not connected to fuzeblock yet), fuel line from aux to main, Heat-Troller.

Most important farkle of all

Aside from the red-neck vent line routing, not too shabby!

The only real objection is the fudge-packing cleanliness of it all.... you ***. ;)

I'll save my further rebukes until you return from Bite The Weenie.... :D
