While I'm not totally broke yet, I don't have all of the $$ to spend for all of the farkeling that I want to do. I inquired at the dealer if I could buy a K&N air filter now and some slip-ons later. He said you will also need a PCIII USB to even attempt either of those add-ons. Is he right or just fishin' for additional business?

I'm the one who should be fishin'

Thanks,

MO

You can run the bike with the OEM mapping and one or the other (Pipe/Filter) but will typically see some lean surging and possibly popping associated with that. Usually you need to remap when running less restrictive exhaust or filter. So the dealer is correct in that you SHOULD run the PC but seems to be pushing the PC a little.

You don't NEED a PC3, but you would be able to take better advantage of the slightly better breathing with one. The FJRs fuel injection computer will certainly compensate for what little gain in airflow those additions would provide so it's not like you will be running too lean all of a sudden. The bike is already too lean and there is plenty of room to compensate and keep it there. Like many I have a K&N and that's it, so if you want to, get it. It doesn't flow any better than stock, it just lasts forever. I think the reason people think cans do so much is they constanty have their wrist into it because the sound is so cool, so they think there is more os a performance gain than there really is because they are constantly hammering the throttle. I'm sure there is some gain, but I think the percieved gain is more than there really is.

No K&N here, but I did add slip-on mufflers. Can't say I noticed any power gain at all. I bought them mostly because I like the sound better, and they look good. It would be tough to notice a 3-5 HP gain on a bike that has over 120HP at the rear wheel, at least from the seat of your pants. You'd prolly need a dyno to tell the difference, if there is any.

No personal experience with this yet, but isn't the purpose of the O2 sensor to automatically adjust the fuel to the needs of the engine? I know there is a limit to the range it can compensate for but it should be able to handle a 5 or 10 horsepower gain.

Once you start pushing real increases in power, like you would with nitrous, you probably need to increase fuel volume by installing a more powerful fuel pump and maybe bigger injectors.

Try Nitrous
I did, and I liked it so much I decided to keep it all for myself and give none to the bike! Besides, rocket packs are so much easier to hook up, no messing with EFI or emissions gear. Just lite 'er up and hang on!

the bike has a cat/con and an excellent design of breather box. as such, a swap to k&n will net you only a reusable filter while a swap of cans will net you a different sound. unless you remove the cat/con the air flow will remain largely unchanged.

Speaking of farkles, Moby:

10-4 Guys, thanks for the feedback.

I think that I will wait for any of those breather/exhaust mods in the near future. I'll save my pennies. Maybe I will have enough money saved by the time when they get the full header system in production. The funny thing is, when I "discussed" buying this bike with my wife, one major selling point on my behalf was "honey, It's already loaded what more could I possibly want?". Farkles are like tatoos, once you get one you want more. Here's my list to date.

D&D risers

Super Vista

ahamaY large WS

RAd Guard

R&G sliders

Tank bag

Mag Blasters

Randy's wire harness

MagKnight bra*

*may send it back

Say BOUNCE, nice tat. The 'Laughing Jap' has always been one of my favorite Dead logos. A decal of that smiling Jap has been on every bike that I've owned since the 70s. You do know the significance of the 13 points on the lightning bolt..., right?

Never heard it called that (laughing jap). It's always been SYF (steal your face) from the album to me.

clue me in on the 13, Deadman.

Would you believe that the celtic knots are the new tattoo (when the photo was taken this past May) and that the SYF is 8 years old?

The 13 points on the lightning bolt refers to the 13th letter in the alphabet, the letter 'M' for marijuana. Same as the diamond patch with the number 13.
