About a week from now my wife and I are taking the FJR along on our trip to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone. We will have 2 days to ride around Jackson hole and 4 days based at the north entrance to Yellowstone. Any suggestions for don't miss riding loops would be greatly appreciated. Planning to see Yellowstone via the FJR. Any reason this is not a good idea, or things to be cautious of, besides being trampled by a bison?

Thanks,

Ed

Have a friend hold some bail money, because the idiots in RVs tended to make motorcyclists a bit stabby (or maybe that was just me)

Hey, I hope you guys have a great time, but be aware that this area is VERY SMOKEY right now with all the wildfires raging in all the Pacific NW states. Here in Salmon, ID, the mountains are not visible as I type this (which is something as the mountains are all around, close to town!). There's actually a health advisory via the National Weather Service right now to advise those prone to allergies and asthma to stay indoors. I would suggest monitoring those NWS sites if possible

I drove from Salmon to Pocatello via Idaho Falls today to pick up my tractor and it was very smokey all the way!

I only advise this, so you won't be surprised. Hopefully it may clear up by the time your trip starts.

Take care, Bob

I live in Bozeman, and am planning two trips the next two weekends. This coming weekend I am taking two new guys on a slow speed trip over beartooth pass, which is east of Yellowstone. Should be a one day trip.

But the following weekend.... I am headed out with my touring partner (1200 GS rider) We are doing the following. this will knock your socks off..

I recommend the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. Near the NE corner of YNP when you're heading toward Beartooth Pass. I also recommend the Beartooth. Highly (no pun intended) enjoyable!

Yep, best day I had in Yellowstone was heading out on last day. I was on the road before sun up and beat the crowds. For a few hours it was like having the park to myself, serene even.

Best advice for riding in the park: take it easy. If you get lucky enough to go fast somewhere, there are quite a few rangers that run radar around and they do write tickets. 45mph in all of YNP. If you start making aggressive passes inevitably you come around a corner and there's an animal sighting traffic jam so everyone you just passed pulls up right behind you. Going out the NE entrance through Lamar Valley usually not so bad.

Don't miss the ride out of the East entrance (Sylvan Pass) around Yellowstone Lake to Cody. The road into Cody is very cool w/some tunnels and reservoir.

And yeah--it's quite smokey around here limiting visibility a lot, and not looking to change anytime soon....

I'll be headed there myself in a week or so... smoky all over the west right now - bring plenty of Visine to flush your eyes out at rest/gas stops!

Thanks to all for the advice and recommendations. Got the FJR all ready to go, hopefully the smoke will not be too huge a factor.....want to take some good pictures. Nikons are my second love.

I just did Beartooth and chief Joseph (both from cooke city to cody, and from Cody to Cooke City).

FANTASTIC.... NO smoke really just a constant haze.

Recent chip seal on much of Chief Joseph, but not too bad. After a few minutes getting used to it, and then getting passed by a Harley, I realized it wasn't as slick as it sounded.

Camped at Ponderosa camp site in Cody WY, in the back of the campground down a really cool twisty 10% downgrade driveway. To babbling brook, with no road noise.. sweet. Ate at the silver dollar bar, awesome burgers and chips.

LOTS of harley guys with six shooters on their side. Very interesting.. I will give two finger piece sign to these harley guys, and not complain if they don't wave back...

Was through there today from Grand Teton to Cody then Chief Joseph and Beartooth. HAze from the fires to the west, was pretty smoky going through Sylvan Pass in Yellowstone, otherwise a great ride. Ditto on the marbles on Chief, also some of the tar snakes were a bit exciting.

Enjoy the trip!

East side of Yellowstone is ridiculous! Sunday traffic not too bad either. 45 mph is a good pace through the park 2up. Got to watch out for these guys though!!!!!
