So first big tour of the year. From Tokyo, went out to western Honshu (the biggest of the 4 major islands of japan).

Took me a few hours to create the report on my local site, will try to add some more pics of the roads here, too. Bit different from many places, I'd imagine. This will be long.

I joined up with a friend near Osaka (Eric) who was taking a couple of his overseas friends around Japan....one's from Germany (Walter), the other South Africa (Ryan). Had some time, so went along.... We went through several 'kens', or prefectures (basically a state). Touring most around: Tottori (鳥取県), Yamaguchi (山口県), Hiroshima(広島県), Ehime (愛媛県), and Okayama (岡山県) kens.... overall 3500+ km.

Here is the overall route from Tokyo (others came from Kansai)

Getting out there (Day 0) was a hike from Tokyo. I left around 11a.m. Tried to get out at 10, but, well, I had to pack stuff up.

Got everything ready, FJR was serviced, cleaned, lookin' good! Starcom had some issues with the microphone, so went old school earplugs/iPod. oh well. Bought a new Mont Bell waterproof bag as well, on the seat. Got this one to be able to hold a tent, etc. Trying to avoid using panniers since squeezing through traffic is majorly slowed with them on.

Bit of drama....

Gabby nudged a deer on the way up the hill on he way to the villa...left a bit of hair!

Tim was low, basically empty, on gas. Tried to use the kerosene pump to extract gas...

Unable to extract any fuel (due to restrictors on the tanks). Tim ran out of gas a ways back from this gas station, coasted to about 150m within the station, at the home stretch here....

For those of you scared to travel here due to road signs, not to fear. See? Generally English. And would be cool to have anyone interested in touring stop by. The sooner the better, I've got some free time just now, but maybe not later, happy to show you around.

That said, the really important stuff (the text in red), is not usually in English.

Lunch at this onsen restaurant. Great onsen actually. Onsen is a public bath, you get naked with a bunch of dudes. a few co-ed ones exist, but that is not so usual. take a shower, jump in a variety of baths, some with bubbles, various temperatures (this one had a 40C, 42C, and 45C. The 45 was ridiculously hot, so hot that when you put your legs in they feel cold. I'm pretty sure it was more than 45. They also had an outdoor bath, which is really nice when it is cool outside.

Headed up around Daisen after lunch. Great roads all around that mountain, we just did a bit of it, snow was around, so some of the goat tracks around the north/east side likely not great.

Time for Day 2. Mostly running along the coast toward Hagi (a place famous for pottery/ceramics, you may have heard of it for that).

Sounds good! sorry we couldn't meet up last time, definitely sort it out next time you are out here.

Nice pictures, as usual. Great roads enjoyed with friends....it doesn't get any better than that! :yahoo:

Thanks dude. Plenty more to come, only on Day 2. :)

Feel a bit bad for the page loading.... hopefully bigger pictures are better tho. :yahoo:

Dinner was at this little local Yakitori place in Hagi.

3390009342_4a74e01fd1_b.jpg

Yakitori is basically anything on a stick. Usually chicken (and chicken parts). But you can get all sorts of things, had some karubi (kalbi?) and many veggies.

And this, the holy grail of yakitori. Asparabacon

That concludes Day 2....
