Does that put him the pantheon of the gods of motorcycling or the loony bin as an absolute nutter?

My pleasure Chris.

He is now 3rd in the all time rankings behind Hailwood and Joey Dunlop.

Simply amazing and absolutely looney. IOMTT is on my lifelong list of things to do (see) along with Macau.
The guy I worked for many years ago was offered a ride at the Macau GP. Bike provided, just get there. It was all too last minute and we couldn't make it......I was more relieved than dissapoinetd.

One of the guys that rode for us finished 4th on one of our bikes in 1994. Had the same deal you mentioned in 1996 (just show up) and he didn't fare as well.
