Joshua Tree NP

Need to inspect a property near Joshua Tree NP. Any good, scenic, fun, roads nearby? Is it worth a ride through the park? If so, is one routing better than another?

Google sez about 330 miles from la casa to property - me being a CBA member and all will need to crash somewhere in that barren land... any suggestions?

I rode through it once. The northern part of the park is really cool. Southern park is just ok, typical desert. I would budget some time to stop and smell the roses in the park (though in this case the roses are interesting rock formations.)

If you have the time and can do it when the park is not mobbed it is most definitely worth the ride through JT. The park really is two different parks from the low desert to the high desert. The rocks are really cool and worth walking around. It's the wrong time of the year for the Joshua Trees and other cactus to be in bloom but if you can ever catch it blooming it's pretty spectacular. What ever you do, avoid the cholla and especially the jumping cholla cactus. My brother didn't realize that he had picked up a couple of jumpers on his shoes and the needles worked through the shoe into his foot. Bad, very bad.

If you are going to arrive via the southern route that takes you through Indio stop at Shields Date Gardens, pick up some Medjools, sample some of the really good date ice cream and learn all about the *** life of a date -- via a movie in their movie theater.

If there is any extra time in your schedule just to the south west is Palomar Mountain State Park. There is a reason this is a squid destination

Also, Rt 243 through Mt San Jacinto State Park is a blast.

The route between the city of 29 Palms & the Village of Joshua Tree is nice. Also, take the road to the Cottonwood park entrance (at the south edge of park) then hit Box Canyon nearby. Nice.

Now that's a good question. This weekend would have been good,except for the rain. On the 19th Hudson is in town,so kinda leaving that weekend open. I'd like to take at least 3 days so I can CBA ride this one. Tentatively Dec 2, 3, 4.

The property is near the north entrance. Given your advice I'll most likely ride south to north, into the good stuff. I prefer to get the not as good stuff rode through first.

Box Canyon is a fun road. I like to ride it from the Salton Sea going Northeast then cross I-10 and your at the start of Joshua Tree NP from the south. Here's Box Canyon road and a few from the park.

Back when we were young, rich, famous and good looking we had use of a house in Palm Desert. The house was originally built for Bill Lear, father of the Lear Jet and the lesser known father of the 8-track tape player. The house had a long hall lined with book shelves which still contained many of his engineering books with his notes and papers stuffed inside.
