The ugly top case infers that the rider is out on a long trip, one that would require all of the extra space the box allows. So it is still fitting with that road adventure theme.
In all fairness, I happen to remember that this was not the actual situation; That it was actually a day ride for the photographer, but that doesn't spoil the inference.
As for me... I generally don't use my top case unless SWMBO is along for the ride. I can fit everything that I'd ever need in the two side cases, regardless of the length of the trip.
